Sunset Photos...NASTY Lens Flare

Alright, another question I am hoping some people might be able to help me with. I have been doing a lot of landscape work lately. When I am shooting directly into the sun for certain sunset shots, I get nasty flare (as you would expect). Normally I would shield the direct light and get rid of it, but with sunsets I cannot do that without having my hand in the frame or covering the sun (obviously cannot do that).

Any ideas or tricks?

So basically do my best in camera with the tips and tricks, then fix in post-processing?

Much of it has to do with timing.

Yeah, I got a few GREAT shots...but also missed a lot of GREAT shots with horrible flare!
