Oddly, Nikon itself has issued a list of good-performing lenses,in the eight-page D800 primer available on-line, and the 24-120 is on that list. As to lenses...there are dozens and dozens of Nikkor lenses that will perform well on that sensor. What one intends to photograph determines the most-useful lenses. A 50mm lens would be nice; the new 50mm f/1.8 AF-S G has the most-sophisticated optical formula of all the Nikkor 50mm's, so that's the 50 I would suggest. The new 85mm f/1.8 AF-S G also has REALLY HIGH resolution abilities--truly exceptional on the D3x, as tested by Photozone. I was floored to see the resolution capabilities of the new 85mm 1.8 AF-S G...just astounded. Those two lenses would allow you to shoot a LOT of subjects, in all types of lighting, and not have to carry much weight. I find the 50 and 85mm primes two of the best for all-around usage on FF bodies. Next, I like a 24mm f/2.8 lens for general wide-angle work--it;'s not all "that" wide, but then again, it does not make images where everything beyond 10 feet looks like you need a microscope to see it...
