Tablet help...

I highly recommend the Google Nexus 7.... and they are priced really nice too. They are not locked down, like the Kindle Fires are ( I bought my GF a Fire HD for her birthday last month)... so you have a much larger choice of apps, and such. If they are going to mostly watch movies, and read Kindle books... then Look at the Kindle Fires or Fire HD. If they are gaming, and surfing... get the Nexus 7. I read a lot on my Nexus 7 (Kindle)... perfect size for it. My Ipad is too big and heavy for extended handheld reading.

If they want a larger tablet than the 7" tablets... the Google is still probably the best bang for your buck.

My 2 cents... with inflation, worth less than that!

On the reader, a Kindle will only read Kindle books from library and Amazon. A Nook will only read Nook books from B&N or library. A generic tablet can run Kindle and Nook software. The Nook does me fine for limited Internet, but my laptop is always handy. Play simple games, i.e. Angry Birds and Words with Friends, but gaming is what the PS3 is for. If you want a tablet that does everything, $200 may be low. Take a look at the Nexus though.

That gets you all the copyright free (LEGAL) stuff out there from the archives as well as masses of general material as well as any nonDRM sold publications.

Kindle (app or tablet) will also allow you to send documents to it... and they will be "Kindle-ized" or optimized for Kindle. I get a lot of stories off of Fan Fiction sites... and send them to my kindle. Works great.

As I am surfing ebay I see I can pick up ipad 1st gen for just over where I want to be. What do you think?

How status conscious are your kids?

Also be really careful about used Ipads on Ebay. Batteries may be shot (doesn't happen too often, but it does happen)...

I don't know if it's status conscious so much as having gotten screwed with the HP tablet... I KNOW they've got ap's and options with the ipad. I actually have a kid who works on the darned things, so if I need repairs it's possible. In fact one with a shot battery would be good if I got it cheap!

It really depends on what they will be using it for.

Do you want the option of lots of apps, games etc then a iPad or iPod touch is the way to go.

As mentioned before I think either a Kindle Fire or Nexus 7 is your best bang for buck. I have something similar to the Nexus 7 and love it!

I LOVE my Samsung Galaxy tab 7.2. Been a super tablet, and not very pricey either.
