Telephoto lens

If you want to use a 70-200mm with a 2*TC the only one that will do it well is the 70-200mm f2.8 IS L M2. This lens and TC combo gets image quality equal to the 100-400mm L lens.
The only downside is AF speed is slower, though the new M3 teleconverters are said to have some bonuses in AF speed over the M2.

I used the M1 70-200mm f2.8 IS L and I've now upgraded to the M2 and I'll say that the image quality when using the 2TC is very noticable and worth the extra costs.

But have you seen the price of the new converters, i use a Kenko 300pro 2x on my 300F2.8l and it is good as a mk2 converter

Yah :(
Hopefully we might see a price reduction eventually on them though it might take a while (esp in the UK).
Till then I'd say that the price increase of the 70-200mm M2 over the original is worth the cost far more than in the case of the teleconverters at present.

Thanks guys,much help given.
If i was going to buy a new lens,it would obv be brand new at the time,so the Cost of the 70-200mm m2 would be worth it, as teleconvertors go,it would obviously be canons own brand.Weither its the mark 2 or the mark 3, the extra bit of speed the mark3 might be nice to have, and some sharper images, but would you say its worth the extra cost if im using it 3/4 times a month,if not less?

Was talking with my Uncle today and as he's looking into starting photography he's also looking to get a Telephoto lens as he likes to take photos of sports events. He's asked me to look into picking a lens for him, around £1500 or less. Say's i can use it for Wildlife when he's not :). Because he's using a 7D i had a thought, its a crop sensor. Ive done the math, and a 300mm lens will be closer to 500mm and still obviously boast the aperture. So we were looking at a Canon Ef 300MM F4 L Is Usm. It's £1100,Which i think, would be ideal for what we both want i suppose, and i was thinking suggesting getting a 1.4tc aswell, giving it closer to 600mm with f5.6 aperture.

Does anyone else have any better idea's?

The crop sensor will give u an advantage instead of 70 -200mm u will be 112-320mm. For shooting birds this is great.

I'd Rather have a Prime for Shooting birds,im looking to get the 70-200 m2 when i get my 5Dm2 for portraits, If my uncle go's for this lens,i wont really need to buy a Telephoto prime straight away,i would just use the 300mm/4 with a convertor and boost my Iso as i'd be lossing one Stop in aperture range.
