Is this the Canon 100mm macro lens that gets the good reviews? Just wanted to make sure before I pull the trigger and order it. I have finally saved up enough, but wanted to make sure that this is the one!

Is there something better in this price range? It will be mounted on my 400D, so the 1.6 crop factor comes into play here.

Thanks,

Derrick

yes, get it :)

For macro the canon 100mm macro is a very good choice and it is very widly used. Another that you might consider which is a little more in cost is this

the sigma 150mm macro. This lens sports a longer focal length and this you have a slightly greater working distance - its quality is comparable to the canon brand lens as well. Also note that this lens comes with both a tripod bracket and a lens hood (the canon does not ship with these you have to get them extra if you want them)

Thanks folks. I pulled the trigger and bought the Canon and lens hood. I plan to stay with Canon for ever and this lens will be a great addition.

Is this lens so heavy that it needs a tripod mount? I will have to go looking again.

Thanks,

Derrick

No its not that heavy - and it can work well hand held as well. However when using macro on a tripod many use a focusing rail and a lens mount tends to work a little better than mounting the camera direct at times

THanks overread. After further research, I can see where it would also be handy for rotating the camera to portrait orientation, but for the price!?!?! They can keep it! LOL
