The Arts Institute?

I am considering going to the Arts Insititute. does anyone know if it is worth the money to take a photography course there?

School of hard knocks.

Takes lots of photos and post them on here. Basically the same as every photography class I've ever had. The only difference between here and a school is that some people on here actually make a living off the photos they take, rather than having to teach about it.

If it will make you feel better you can send me a tuition check every year.

Most people here will recommend you against it. I don't really have a strong opinion.

Some people go to school thinking about career. In most cases, people don't end up doing what they think they will be doing anyways. So I'd just go with what you believe in. Things change. Your opinion of yourself changes too. They say you can learn photography on your own. That's true, but probably not as deep in the same amount of time as you would if you just do it as a hobby.

I can tell you about design schools but not photography. Most of your success comes after school. Bottom line is, pick a full 4 year accredited program. Better still, go to a proper university and learn from your peers, especially non-photography major folks. AI is a trade school, for profit(nothing wrong with that), but they will give you a false impression that your future is bright with them in order to get you to pay up. Go to a program with high entry standard, like one with a requirement of portfolio. If they let you in without any hurdle except a down payment or something like that, chances are they are much more interested in your wallet than your aspirations.

I will not be going to AI i have heard for third party people (friends of those who have gone) and heard nothing good really. just wanted more opinions on the matter.

I am working on getting like a little "study group/ support group" started in my area for all level photographers. i know i could really benifit from such a thing and many others can as well.

Business school... learn how to run a business successfully! A poor photographer can do well if they know how to run a business... whereas a great photographer will go broke, if they don't know business.

good advice. I have thought a lot about going to school for business. didnt really think about going to school for my own business though. "funny how you forget the simplest of things when you are in a state of mind to think too high."

Business school is the best advice. You can learn everything about photography by reading and practicing.

There are many schools that are good and most good ones are not tech schools but regular colleges. Daytona College gets some under the radar props and Rochester Institute of Technology is highly regarded

The Art Institutes and other 2 year specialty tech schools are more profit oriented. If you want to major in photography, I say go for it but get a four year degree and avoid the fast track for profit schools.

P.S. the general consensus is to focus on business or marketing but really its your choice. Perhaps a minor in photography would be better?
