What's new

The Coffee House

Well the photography group met last night, I'll keep an open mind but it's probably not going to be what I'm looking for. 18 people showed up so the turn out wasn't bad, only 3 men in the group, and I'm the oldest by probably 30 years at least.🫣 Two Mom's with cameras with limited experience and the rest none. At least one of the women there I knew from a previous group.
Be patient. Finding your tribe in these groups takes time. Joined an established club in Toronto as a rookie. Membership was mostly older and, I assumed, not much fun. There were some who played the "elders and betters" game; others were into a$$-sniffing snobbery about gear. I did connect with a very mixed group called by a very senior guy, "The Newly-Wed/Nearly-Dead Crew."
Great fun, non-club outings, photowalks and small informal meet-ups in Toronto's many old 'hoods for food and drink. Miss 'em terribly.

Yup, I had to bite my tongue really hard when the co-leader (one of the mom's w/camera) with her Canon Rebel and 18-55 kit lens informed the group she only saved JPEG, because she believed "everything" should be SOOC, and had a flash but she didn't use it. 😉

There's a definite gender gap as well, the leader is under 30, so we'll see.

Just finished my 2nd cup of Folger's Dark Silk while watching Youtube video's of various lenses and equipment available for taking photos.

I am nearly overwhelmed with the differences between my old SLR camera that I used many years ago and these new DSLRs.

I had only been using my phone over the years along with a couple of point and shoot camera's. With work and raising two kids, I did not have time for another hobby.

But my kids have left the home and I am rapidly approaching retirement age. As such, I have had a renewed interest in photography.

And considering that my other hobby, traveling all over the country on motorcycle, I have access to many places that need "shot".

Now my only thing to do is learn a far more complex platform than my old Pentax 35mm film camera!

I think I need another cup of coffee....

Why switch, it's just as capable today as it was back then of producing beautiful photos. Film forces you to slow down/compose/adjust before the shutter release, and tends to be less edgy, which appeals to many. I still have a few film era cameras, that I occasionally shoot. If you do switch most of what you leaned about exposure/composition/light will transfer over., so have fun.

Monkey see monkey do? LOL

You have a point. I still have my Pentax K1000 that I used in Jr and High School as the School Photographer and member of the Photography Club.

I had use of the school's camera's for the "Official" photo's and had my K1000 for those special shots I wanted to take.

I haven't seen film in stores for some time. I assume that it can be ordered on the internet?

I still wish to use my DSLR. They are very convenient and a memory card just holds so many shots when shooting in Jpeg only.

But, I would love to bring the old Pentax out again.

Great camera that never dies, I have a K1000, a Zx-m, and a Canon EF. Yes film/developing is available online, I also have a couple of brick & mortar stores within an hour that offer both.

It's been an odd week.

Poor kitty having a rough time lately. Vets are unsure at the moment, blood work is next. It's possible he has some kind of infestations on his skin or allergies or possible thyroid disease. He's on a few medications right now to keep him pain free and his anxiety low.

Hopefully everything will be okay. It pains me to see him like this...month ago he was just fine and suddenly he start scratching his neck so bad he lost all the hair around his neck and cut himself pretty badly to the point he got a bacterial infection which I been treating him for it now. It looking better each day though and he's starting to eat more and play too.

Smoke from Wild fires from Canada creeping into Vermont last night and today. It's very hazy out there, not the worse I seen however. But the sun was so red last night and this morning too.

I built a little raises flower bed for the sunflowers. I should have already got them planted but too many things going on. Hopefully this week I can get them going. I'm really really behind on planting and I blame the weather here. It's been going between summer and winter. As I'm typing this it's 90f and the other day it was 40f.

I'm tired. Sorry I haven't been active on here much. Waiting for my new-to-me Nikon D750 to arrive. I'm a excited for that, will be nice to get some photo therapy in again. The Nikon D70s I had kinda got the fire ignited again. So we will see how this turns out. I also picked up a brand new Nikkor 50 1.8G in box for $100. All in all...I got the D750 that's practically new and a new lens for $690. I really can't complain about that.

Our New England climate seems to be shifting a bit with May being colder than usual the past couple of years and then the heat hanging on well into October. Was out chasing northern lights the other night wearing my winter coat and fleece lined pants and today it is above 80° here. The plants don’t know whether to grow or go into dormancy.

Poor kitty! They really hate the cones, and it only contributes to their anxiety. ❤️ Really glad to hear he's getting better. He'll be very happy when the cone comes off.

We're being mildly impacted by the Canadian wildfires, too - and we had a sunset the other day that looked exactly like this!

Raised bed looks great!

Our May weather was chilly, too. The last few days have climbed into the 90sF, which is supposed to fire up some rain this evening. My garden is slowly unfolding into summer norms, though. I have coneflower buds and the daylillies are ready to start popping.

Butterflies and fireflies any day now. :boogie:

Seems to he pretty widespread. Around here farmers are just now planting as are many parts of the midwest.

Coneflowers are budding up here as well and most of my dahlias have broken the surface (25 of 40). Saw an Eastern tiger swallowtail today. And possibly have an Eastern Black Swallowtail cat on my dill plant. Need to get the 300mm macro out to confirm. But that’s a job for tomorrow!

Meanwhile, Princess has started work and she cooked dinner tonight. She may make a good roommate after all!

Had a cataract removed yesterday, Doc said I win the prize for most improved vision 1 day post op. Amazing how much whiter and brighter that eye is now.
That's awesome! Best wishes for a continued speedy recovery!

Poor kitty.

ME issued an ozone advisory for the system coming out of Mid- Atlantic and a particle advisory for wild fire smoke.

The plan is to go back up Friday.

So, this tastes like carbonated fuel oil at the beginning and ends with a note of cough syrup. It is recommended to chug one first thing in the morning and nothing worse will happen to you all day.
