What's new

The Coffee House

Well a new toy arrived today. I decided to take the plunge for a new lens! Canon RF200-800mm F6.3-9 IS USM. It seriously dwarfs my other lens in size. Even my RF100-400 looks small beside it.

Anyways should be fun and my RF1.4 TC works on it making it a 280-1120 if I ever wanted extreme reach. It looks like a SpaceX rocket ship when fully extended.View attachment 283569

Sweet! Do you need a limber for it? Maybe the RHA can tow it around for you... 😂

Hopefully, Homeland Security doesn't mistake it for an RPG!

Five or six inches of wet heavy snow fell at MLSIL's last night. I went out and hit the sidewalk and front porch with salt just after it started, and shoveled an hour later while it was less than two inches. This morning there wasn't much more on the sidewalk. I pushed it aside and cleared off the two cars (our truck and her old Saturn SUV).

The 24" snowblower isn't in stock anywhere, so looking at the 28". Now I have to choose between wheeled or tracked; MLW gave me the go-ahead on either one.

Presently under attack for the next 12hrs by wind and moderate snow. More into the weekend<<gasp>>
24 inchers seem to be the sweet spot. Ran a 28 at the family ruin for a decade and quickly learned to slow it down. Run 'em fast and they start busting shear pins since the impeller is no bigger than the 24" models. I vote for wheels since they're easier to turn 90-180 degree. Chains solve most traction issues with wheels.

FYI: This guy is hugely helpful for most small engine ills+ snowblower maintenance. Bookmark!

Yeah, why I want a 24 wheeled, if I can get it: cost and maneuverability. It’s only one additional pass on the 15' wide driveway but I’ll take the 28” wheeled if I have to.

Welcome to The Coffee House, where there is no competition, no Leaderboard, no C&C, and no stress. It was started by small group of TPF gnomes who not only like photography, but also like to share coffee, cinnamon buns, poems, and stories.

Pull up a seat, grab a cup, and unwind!

Well, this is a coincidence. I found my way back here for some photo fellowship and I just saw that some of you might enjoy or at least tolerate some poems or short stories as well. I po and short. Hope to see this thread active again!

I found a 24" wheeled at a cycle shop around the corner so I put on reserve. I'll call them later on and if really in stock, I'll pick it up tomorrow. Really thinking about a trailer this trip to carry it and some more larger items. At least it would be easier to load and unload a trailer than the truck bed.

I've read you can get chains for the wheeled blowers to increase traction. Our driveway is about 15' x 70' (measured from orthoimagery) and pretty level so tracked is overkill. the difference between 24" and 28" is one pass, so not a real problem. I do want electric start, if only for the times my shoulder and back are giving me fits - I'm not getting younger. It also makes it easier for MLW to run it, if need be. Second choice would be the 28" wheeled. If only tracked are available, I won't turn one down. That would make it possible to clear a path down the hill to the frozen pond. I guess I can start ice-fishing.

I decided on the Honda for a few reasons: they use their commercial engines in the blowers, the electric start is a 12-v battery like in a car, and I prefer the hydrostatic transmission. They are not cheap, but if properly maintained, it will probably outlast me and lazy lobster will inherit it.

Welcome back. Mostly chatter in this thread, these days. There is a Haiku thread somewhere.

Well as if we don't already have enough problems, on the news this morning - a shortage of cocoa beans is pushing up the price of chocolate for Valentine Day. Seems like every holiday now they come up with a new excuse to jack up prices on something. 🙄

More concerning is they have discovered an asteroid between 100-300 ft across hurtling toward earth with a current 2% chance of hitting us. Due to the size it won't obliterate us, but at a speed of 30,000mph, it'll make for a bad day in a localized area. Anyone interested in starting an "asteroid pool". The winner who guesses closest to where it lands wins pot, assuming they're still around to collect. 😉

I can think of sources of imminent disaster far closer to home. But then I have a good imagination...

I stuck with an old school MTD-made 24incher for its simplicity and DIY maintenance/repair. The only real issue I've ever had involved busted shear pins that rusted in place, disabling 1 of the 4 augers. Solution was a regular shot of WD-40 on each to keep 'em loose.
