The most common mistakes photographers make

Most common?

1) Sticking to a low ISO. Honestly more newbies need to shoot at ISO 400 or 800 for a while! Learn not to fear the high ISO - esp if they are shooting anything regularly that isn't landscapes/blurry water or under controlled lighting.

THIS THIS THIS!! I was sooooo conservative with ISO for the longest time. When I was poking around I saw a thread about auto ISO and decided to play around on auto for a while and see. My eyes were opened! I went back into manual and pushed the limits of my ISO, I saw where I started getting unacceptable noise and where it worked perfectly. It was one of the biggest epiphanies I have had along the way.

Not using the lens hood, some people use it but use it backwards!!

Relying on an interesting subject to make the shot "good".

These day, probably the biggest is taking one shot and thinking I'm done. Trying hard to slow down and stop to "see" and check different perspectives, different exposure settings, different posing/staging. As one of my photo buddies said - you gotta work the scene/situation. And the first shot is rarely that one that gets it right.

Seeing something gloriously, amazingly, incredibly picture worthy and thinking, "if I only had my camera with me..."

I so wish everyone would read that one...And NO the camera on your PHONE does not count....!!!

But also remember leaving your camera in the car overnight is not a wise move on cold nights......then rushing in to a warm house to take family Pics is not a good idea.

Backing into an open bottle of red wine while taking an important group shot.
Almost falling off a cliff, trying to catch a lens I dropped.
Picking a pilot, who told me he was lost, while I was doing some aerial shooting out of an open cockpit.
Forgetting that I was using a regular lens not a telephoto, and therefore I was only 4 feet away from the crocodile.

I got a media pass for an international athletics meet, and the first thing I did was take a test shot to check the exposure, shooting manual, I checked it out on the rear screen and it looked a tad dark, so I adjusted the exposure checked again and it was still dark after 5 adjustments and the image still being dark I realised I still had my sunglasses on.:grumpy:

Taking home drunk bridesmaids, never works out well in the end.

Not a camera one, but turning the camera side ways while video taping thinking I can change the image orientation.

Believing selective coloring is the greatest thing since sliced bread.

lol

But it is.....how can you say that when it is all I do.... ;)
