Bracketing should produce an image without the blown out spots.

Sure, there are blown out highlights. But I hate how HDR destroys lights and shadows. While I want to include most of the tonal range, I don't need detail in every single piece. I don't like to bracket so I have EVERYTHING perfectly exposed, as I feel that ruins the feel of the image. I do agree that I forgot to re-adjust the distortion (I did on another version, but I posted this one accidentally). I like the way the sculpture glows--it adds an air of grandeur to the room, if that makes sense.

I think the original image is too dark as well. I like Lew's edit.

I agree with you.. It also seems to have a better mood than Lew's edit.

Blending two exposures does not necessarily mean an over cooked and distorted image.
If down with some taste and skill, blending can bring a bit of detail to the blown out areas.

agree you don't want everything perfectly exposed. I also think the blown out section is a no go. Just not something you want to do in this type of shot. A artistic shot for a different purpose maybe, not this type of shot blown out isn't a good thing. Somewhere between your edit and maybe lews edit would be ideal. Realistic still, no blown highlights. Still carrying the mood, maintaining shadow detail. Agree with you on the "feel" of the image. Sometimes perfection ruins other things.
Lew gave you a good critique though. The rest of us probably should have we dropped the ball. You can smack me if you like. LOL

Yeah. I felt "perfection" here wouldn't look good. The room isn't bright. It isn't perfectly exposed. The tonal range is crazy. I did my utmost to properly show the "feel" of the room.
