To start, I know absolutely nothing about photography and even less about cameras.

I really want to get my boyfriend a camera for his birthday. He's into photography and likes to take pictures of buildings, flowers up close and people. I have no clue where or how to start looking around for one.

I'd appreciate it if someone could give me some suggestions. My budget is about 500$.

The basic entry-level DSLR cameras are all about $500 with a basic 18-55 mm zoom kit lens. Canon, Nikon, Pentax, sony are all pretty much equally good cameras.
I highly recommend you get him a $500 gift certificate and let him pick what he wants/needs.

A nikon brand would give you good features for $500 and they are good cameras to start with.

Get him one of these......

.....And let him decide. In a place like this the Nikon fanboys will tell you Nikon. The Canon fanboys will tell you Canon. The Olympus fanboys will tell you Olympus and the Pentax fanboys will tell you Pentax. (We don't count the Sony fanboys. Just Kidding.)

With a gift card he can go out and pick what he wants to fit his needs with out a bunch of people suggesting things to you that may or may not matter to him and you may or may not understand. Camera's like many things are personal choices. If they weren't then one size would fit all.

Think of it this way Molly, do you really want your boyfriend out there buying say your bra's for you?
