Thinkpads

I'm not entirely sure where to post this, so forgive me if it is in the wrong place.

I was wondering if any of you had experience with the T520 or W520 Thinkpad series. Both of them offer a high resolution, "color accurate" display. A friend of mine who is a hobby artist draws using his T520, though his is older and does not have the high resolution, the color accuracy was impressive (for a Thinkpad, which have generally looked washed out). Does anyone have any experience with these? How good are they as far as laptops go? Do they compete with the MBP? They look pretty darn impressive to me.

I edit my photos on a desktop with a 24" IPS monitor. I'm planning on getting a color profiler next month. However, it'd be nice to be able to edit stuff when I'm on vacation and don't have access to my desktop. I get an employee discount on Thinkpads (several hundred dollars off), so I was considering if this new screen they have makes them good for travel editing.

I don't know the model number, but one of the students in my Lightroom class had an IBM laptop with a high resolution screen and a built-in display calibration system. I assume it's the same or similar to what you're asking about. It seemed like a nifty setup, although I'm still not sold on the idea of a laptop being a truly good option for critical image editing. But of course, there are plenty of things that you can do that may not require full accuracy on your display. If someone was going to use a laptop for editing, this sounds like one of the best options.

Although, the guy who had this laptop (and a calibrated display at home) seemed to have an issue with his calibration, and the photos he sent in for the homework assignment, all tended to look too dark. We weren't able to figure out what his problem was :scratch:

This series of laptops is designed as a workstation. The W520 has the option of coming with the PanTone color calibrator. Looks like you can put twice as much RAM in it than the T520, it also has usb 3.0 ports instead of 2.0.

I used to use Lenovo T520 for editing photographs. I used DataClolor Spyder3 Pro for calibration. I did not get a chance to compare and proof the performance but in my opinion it was a great laptop.

I have an Old Lenovo T61, and it's still a great machine. The display is surprisingly color accurate straight out of the box.

I may be biased, my father works for IBM.

I know Thinkpads are good machines. My fiance has one, though his doesn't have the color accurate screen (his model doesn't come with one) and my dad has been using them for almost 20 years now. Still, it's good to see that other people think they're okay for photo editing. Obviously it wouldn't be my main machine for photo editing, but as I said, when I travel I don't want to have to wait until I get home to go through travel photos. As for the "good deal", I already get nearly $500 off of thinkpads thanks to the company I work for.
