Thoughts on D4?

I think it's not so much this, but more that having their studio camera cost over $8,000 really screwed them. Most studio photographers went to Canon for the 5dII because it was just as good of a studio camera image quality wise, and less than half the price of the D3x. There are VERY VERY VERY select few photographers who went with a D3x rather then a 5dII. For $8,000 of the D3x you could get a 5dII along with a some seriously good L glass.

Sure, the 5dII doesn't have the build quality, or autofocus of the D3x, but it's not going to be tracking moving subjects or going out in the pouring rain. The 5dII really killed the D3x, and Nikon wasn't about to let it happen with the next generation of cameras. That being said, the d800 will have to be a SICK, SICK camera to make 5dII users choose it over a 5dIII.

No, I'm only 19 and don't have close to enough money for that yet. I can't even afford the D7000 I've been saving for man.

I'll have a D4 in about 10 years when it's selling for $1000 used and is still a freaking sick camera.

I imagine if I already had a D700 or D3(xs), I might not have been inclined to jump at one... but I didn't. I am using a D300, so this is a huge jump for me. No point in spending $5200 for the D3S when $5995 gets me the D4.<br>

That said, my original plan was the D800... I don't NEED the top of the line camera... I REALLY don't, but everything seems to indicate that the D800 is going to be the high-pixel count performer (think: studio camera) and the D4 is the high-ISO performer (think: field camera). I need the latter, and I really really don't need the former.<br><br>Maybe 16mp isn't pushing the boat out enough for people who want to upgrade, but if Nikon continue the improvement run they are having with each successive generation of DSLR I would imagine that a full frame with a potentially massive ISO ability,16mp will be more than enough mp for most peoples needs. I would say that the slight difference with 16 and 18mp would be almost negligable. Nikon always seem to keep the mp count slightly lower than canon, and here again when compared to the 1DX, and in the last few years this seems to make a cameras that generally get more favourable reviews for image quality. Hope they both deliver what the public expects<br>

I DO wish it were just a couple more MP... like literally, 18 instead of 16... honestly, I think Nikon is being a bit silly at 16mp, my guess is that's all about making the higher quality image at the higher ISO.

Nice, but I don't see enough improvements over the D3s to make it worth dropping $6K!

But if you had a D3s you could sell for 4k, I definitely see enough improvements to make it worth the 2k cost to upgrade. For me the ethernet control would be freaking amazing to use it as a remote camera. Can't wait to see that feature trickle down to a camera I can afford.

I doubt that you can get 4k, especially since the D800 will be $4k.

They finally announced it. Luckily, I still think Canon's 1DX is still the better camera so I don't have to have any brand envy like I did with the D3. Ha.

Why exactly is the 1DX BETTER as you put it?? Even though there are no reviews out for either camera. Hmmmmm does sound a tad suspicious to me...

I'm not a troll, I'm just saying. I was really jealous of people with a D3 as opposed to the 1D Mark IV, because the D3 was a better camera in my opinion. I was shooting a football game last fall and there was some douchebag working for a news station with one, and he was constantly being like "hey look at the shot I got, this camera is amazing", and it was lol.

I think that if the Canon 1DX doesn't have the problems of the Mark III, then I think it's a strong contender, so I don't have to envy those with a camera that I'll never have a chance to use, ever, because I shoot Canon.

I can't tell if being a technology nerd is a blessing or a curse when it comes to photography.

I don't think your statement would've caused controversy if you put it like this in the first place... I always get wound up when people start using the word 'Better'.

Better than what?? I always think. The Canon 1DX will be a wonderful camera that will serve Canon users well and the Nikon D4 will be a wonderful camera that will serve Nikon users well. But obviously from your statement you were not intending to necessarily begin a flame war.

Yes your right, the Nikon D3S was superior in many ways to the cameras Canon was offering, now Canon have raised the game and I think the 1DX will match the D4.

The wonder of both these cameras is the fact they are pretty much more than any human being could ever need, even the top Pros will not necessarily need every feature a D4 or 1DX offers. And that is why the D4 announcement is a very very special announcement for Nikon users, it is a camera than can serve any purpose known to man!

The D800 on the other hand will be useful for using on a tripod or in a studio and lenses will have trouble resolving 36MP. This makes the D800 a LIMITED camera in my opinion.

Admittedly nothing factual 2Wheel, but when 95% of websites are saying the rumour is 36MP, something is happening. And also Sony are about to use a 36MP sensor in their next Full frame? For example, the rumours about the D4 being 16MP came true didn't they?

I watched that video too and enjoyed it. However it is way more camera then I'll need (and as KmH indicated, most TPF members) in the foreseeable future. I'm hoping some of the cool tech in it (wireless control, ethernet connectivity, better storage cards, etc) will eventually trickle down to pro-sumer cameras. I'd love to be able to control my camera from an app on my tablet, download pix without having to hook up to a wire, etc.

One option that Jarad mentioned in the video that may make it more affordable for you (as a pro) is to sell the D3 while it hasn't lost much value and use it to fund the D4?
