Tips For Shooting When You're In The Shade But The Background In Sun

I realize the ultimate solution is not do it, but sometimes if you don't have a choice. Any suggestions for setting/techniques etc., that others utilize to minimize the effects.

Not necessarily; more light definitely makes it easier, but you can do a lot with 1-2 speedlights.

Set bracket to automatic and underexpose foreground intentionally so that one end of the bracket set will be the correct exposure for the foreground shade.

I would set the camera to take a correct exposure for the background and then use the flash for the foreground.

I've always done well with bracketing and stitching the two photos together in post.

Have it on Kindle, and have read it. Unfortunately I need an external hard drive for the brain, because it seems like if I don't use it everyday, it gets deleted or least sent to archive! LOL As soon as @tirediron replied above it all came back to me. I've tested a couple of setups this afternoon, and feel comfortable enough to try it out on my granddaughter next time. And, to be sure I don't forget I'm in the process of building a little "book of cheat sheets".

Apart from fill flash you could always just download some wedding fauxtog LR presets made just for that (just remember to shoot JPEGs):

1 . If you want background then fill light .
2. If you don't care about background spot the couple , blow out background .
3 . Bracket a few exposures with couple and merge in post .
4. Shoot couple properly exposed , shoot a few of properly exposed background w/o couple , then merge in photoshop .

Since I have been only using Sony SLR's(mirror and Translucent), I don't know the capabilities of other brands. Sony software handles the problems y'all are talking about "in camera". There are two modes: the first is 5 levels of available dynamic range optimization, and the second is 6 levels of high dynamic range. These pretty well solve the shade/sunlight problems that are mentioned in this thread. If your Nikon or Canon does not have these features, I cannot add to what others have suggested to fix the problem of high levels of light differentials in a frame. If you use Sony and have these options, try them out if you haven't already.

you can get a completely black background in bright day light using just a speed light..

pretty sure that is the Bracketing feature mentioned earlier.
