What's new

Tired of it

Yep was a computer engineering tech. And loved the work with a passion last 30 years or so. And just now burned out and no longer get the passion for it.

Way too many are working just a job to pay the bills in drudgery and discontent.
Only found my new passion after retiring and having a heart attack with too much cheeezzeburgers and pizza sitting at the computer all the time. So my first passion kind of lead me to my second passion. As the doctor suggested a get out of the house type hobby and a photography hobbyist is born.

As to finding time. Many take their cams with them everywhere and stop before or after work.
Analyze their schedules. Like me I found all kinds of redundant activities I did over and over like wearing an old sock. Too much time gabbing on the phone of rehashed conversations. So got rid of my phone. TV way too much watching when it really isn't entertaining or infomative. Then I turn it off. Now watch it about a third of the time I use too. Arranged my time by elimination and consolidation of the things of life that eat up my time. I think many can find the time if the re-look at their lifestyle patterns. Do you really need to stop at the bar every night? and always have 3 or 4 beers?

Just comes down to priorities of the things you do. Sometimes you realize that you can find time if photography is important enough to you. And sometimes you realize even tho you love it. You just can't find the time to benefit from learning and doing it.

If I do photography full time, I have to make substantially more than what I am making. If it is the same or just a tad bid more, I rather stay weekend warrior because most weddings and family photos are done in the weekends anyway.

When you are self employeed you have to pay your own benefits, like life insurance, health insurance, blah, blah, blah.)

More than 50 percent of photographers are self-employed.

The lowest reported salary for a photographer was $15,000. The highest-earning 10 percent of photographers, however, earned more than $56,000. The disparity between these ranges is mostly explained by experience, name recognition, and quality of work.

So I am a weekend warrior. I do most of my shots in the weekend and night (trying to generate 2nd income). I have a full time job (structural/civil engineer). Recently with this past long weekend it has been very hard for me to be focusing on my main job.

Just let the creative side of you keep its outlet. Medical Insurance, a reliable paycheck and a predicable schedule are very important too.;)

Yeah..... $56,000 won't cut it. I guess I'll keep dreaming.

But I am at work right now bud! hahhaah I cant be walking around taking photos of my boss and coworkers, can I?

Sounds to me you are not challenged enough @ work, are you a civil servant?

I know for a fact that is the case here in Ontario Canada but I doubt any would look to photography for a better income. I retired from the Ontario Ministry of Transportation after a carreer in highway, bridge construction, maintenance & materials engineering. Just so you know I am not dogging on you if you are a civil servant.

This is how I'm approaching photography at this point...I'm in graduate school getting my masters for a particular type of counseling that is not always uplifting, so being able to take photos of families and children will be my outlet. Not planning on having it pay all of the bills just yet ;)

Recently with this past long weekend it has been very hard for me to be focusing on my main job. All I do is TPF (You can probably tell), facebook, web surfing. Cant focus anymore. I rather be outside taking photos. I wish one day I could make a lot more money taking photos than what I am making in engineering and be a photographer full time! Only time can tell. Too all full time photographer, I envy you!

Don't envy, it is a miserable existence. Semi tongue in cheek but not fully.

"National Geographic Magazine photographer Joel Sartore shoots in some of the most exotic locales on earth, but often in wretched conditions for weeks on end, and always under pressure to produce pictures worthy of publication in a legendary magazine. A devoted husband and father of three, he often wonders if it's the best job in the world or the worst... "You have to be really patient," says Sartore. "If I weren't Type A and very obsessive compulsive, there's no way I'd do this. I don't think you could stand it!" "

Off topic, but I thought for sure (judging by the title) that this was a farewell, I'm outta here thread.

I started my career 31 years ago. When I was younger, I saw other people doing what I wanted to do, and I wanted to do it then. Well 30 years have passed and I an now the guy doing what other young people such as yourselves want to do.
Have some patience, enjoy your life, and the day will hopefully come when you will be where you want to be.

...Until then, concentrate on the career you are building, it will be the path you follow to get you where you want to be.

I have been shooting nights and weekend for so long, after my day job and everything that needs to be done....

I paid every thing off and left the corp world and now I focus on my photography biz... as I like to tell people I am a starving artist

but now I do what I love, I get to use my imagination daily and I get to live life just a little simpler

I do have to think about shopping, I have to look at what equipment I will need next week..... the grass is always greener until you get there.... or is it

I design precast arch bridges/culvert.
