Tokina 12-24mm f/4 AT-X Pro DX? GOOD BUY?

Hi, I found this lens locally selling for $350. I was wondering what peoples experiences have been with this lens? If you could post example pictures that would be EXCELLENT!


Would this lens be better than the nikon 18-200? I am looking for a good all around lens is this it? If I found a 18-200 on BH for $379 is that better deal than the tokina?

These lens are totally different and you won't be able to do the same thing with them, are you aware of that?
the 12-24 will be for landscape, it is a wide angle, the 18-200 is a very versatile lens that can give you wide angle as well as telephoto. it is a better all around lens.
But there are many other options available, take your time, and explore.

So the Nikon will be a better all in one lens? Yeah there are SO MANY choices out there I don't know what to choose.

Here is the break down of what I mostly shoot...

Landscape - 75% of the time
Portraits - 25%
Beach Scenery - 50%
Around the house (inside and out) - 80%
Cars/ATV's plus SKY - 70%


ETC. I mostly shoot outside but I do, do some inside stuff.

This was shot with a Tokina 12-24 f/4 @ 12mm. This lens does not have a focusing motor and, depending on your camera model, may not AF with your camera. It does AF with D90, D7000, D200, D300 but not with D30-31-3200, D50-51-5200.

It works fine with a d7000. I never use it as a walk around, I use it when I want to really emphasize something like the rock in the pic above.

The 12-24. Awesome for anything to shoot. You can use it for scenery, or to get up close. I have the Nikkor 10-24 and love it for all kinds of shots.

a "walk around" lens still really depends on what you want to shoot with it. there isnt really "one" lens that does everything and still does it really well. a lot of people like a 24 or 28mm prime as their "walk around lens" for landscape and buildings, and some people prefer a longer prime or tele-zoom. it really depends on what you are trying to photograph. If you dont mind sacrificing some image quality, just get a lens that covers a huge focal range and do everything with it.
