Looks like you had a fun shoot. One thing that stands out for me, is they seem soft. Either you missed the focus, you're using a lens that's not great, or your F-Stop was just to far open, and hard to get a good focus. Keep trying. You've got a good model there to work with.

I agree, and I would also avoid all such unused space on top.

I was using the Sigma F1.4 EX DG HSM. I think the lighting i had on her was really bright and my shutter speed not fast snough.

I noticed the unused space too.

EXIF for #1

Aperture 1.4Exposure Time 1/800 (0.00125 sec)
Focal Length 50.0 mm
Flash On, Fired
ISO 200

Her right eye looks most in focus. At F1.4 you might have just had too shallow of a DOF to get her whole face in focus. Why not 100 ISO with the flash?

Would you mind sharing your settings?

I had the Sigma wide open at 1.4 with shutter at 100-125 and iso 200 with 2 lights on her face and a flash fill. I used it on the gun picture.

I forgot to lower that with the lighting and flash. I keep on forgetting some settings.

I agree F1.4 is a bit wide for wanting to do shots like this, its so far open you can barley tell what is actually in focus anymore. Ive noticed this clear up til about F2.2 which im sure would have been fine to use for this. I think the lighting is good, as for the space above not so much if there was a reason for it it would be ok, but for this I would have dropped down a bit. The 200ISO is actually fine, your saving your battery life on your flash.. I don't think there's a real need to go as low as 100ISO.

Care telling us why?

I wanted to blur out the background where i forgot to iron out the wrinkles. I should have used 2.8 or higher since i had the supported lighting huh?

You had the light. Now did you have the space? If you were in a open room, moving your subject away from the background will give the same effect while still allowing a shot taken at f/4 or f/5.6 to work. If you were more confined, f/2.8 would work as well.

Hm, well all of your shots were taken at a shutter speed greater than your x-sync speed of your camera. Were you using HSS on your 430EX in the last shot?

None of the shots you posted were taken anywhere near 1/100 of a second. They just look like you missed the focus.

I ordered a Sigma 50mm f/1.4 around xmas time. The first one that shipped to me front-focused by about 1cm. In the event that your lens is doing the same thing, it would give soft results like the photos you posted.

Anyway, I exchanged it for another that performs much better.

Here's an example of my problem: http://i.imgur.com/ovcJB.jpg

Here's the test I used: Focus Testing - photo.net

AH.. Just noticed you're using a 7D. I believe that has micro-adjust focus profiles and will allow you to correct for front or back focusing lenses. That would be sweet if that's all you have to do..
