What's new

Took some pictures of my friend.

AH.. Just noticed you're using a 7D. I believe that has micro-adjust focus profiles and will allow you to correct for front or back focusing lenses. That would be sweet if that's all you have to do..

that's what I did to with my D300s. My Sigma 18-50 2.8 was front focusing about 1/2 cm. I did some fine tuning to the focus profile for this lens and now it's a lot better. Not 100% perfect, but a big improvement.

Ca you even use high speed sync with the flash off the camera?

Yes, assuming you have PW's or another professional trigger package... They also can use TTL as well.

You missed the focus on all of them. My thinking is your 50mm is too wide open.
Get some separation between your subject and background 4-6 feet. Aperature should be 5.6 to 8 or smaller for portraits. You shutter does not need to be at 800 (unless the subject had 15 cups of coffee) bring it down to 100-150 and maybe up the iso alittle. Tweak it from there. Keep at it, it'll click soon.

I ordered a Sigma 50mm f/1.4 around xmas time. The first one that shipped to me front-focused by about 1cm. In the event that your lens is doing the same thing, it would give soft results like the photos you posted.

Anyway, I exchanged it for another that performs much better.

Here's an example of my problem: http://i.imgur.com/ovcJB.jpg

Here's the test I used: Focus Testing - photo.net

Maybe it was the len but i think it's my mistake. I'll try to test it tonight.
