Just wondering if anyone had some tips on shooting some cycling photography. I will be using a d3100 with the Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 lens that I rented for a day. The race will be taking place from 5-8pm on a racetrack as the course. I thought this would be a great opportunity to get some cool shots because usually in cycling you have 10 seconds to take a shot of the peloton before they pass. This race will feature riders going off individually against the clock so a rider will pass every 30 seconds. Plus with the course being at a race track I should be able to get pretty close to the action. I will be using a monopod for support. Here is a link for some more event info- Thanks!http://tou.s3.amazonaws.com/Stage_3.pdf

70-200 will always be a go to lens. Since they are moving believe it will give you a little more leway than a fixed. I guess it all depends on your location and proximity to the riders.

Shoot well, Joe

Be sure to try panning. Use a slow shutter speed, focus on one rider, follow the moving bike with your camera as you shoot.

To stop the action, use this rule of thumb. For shutter speed, double the number of the focal length. For example, if you at shooting at 300mm set the shutter speed for 600 (or higher).
