I'm interested in getting a tripod for my Nikon D50, but unfortunately I have no clue what I should get. The D50 has a 18-200mm Tamron lense, which I think puts the total weight at just over 2 pounds. I don't plan on buying any heavier lenses in the future, if that will make a difference. I'm looking for something for pretty common use, it doesn't have to be extremely stable, just something for a ameture photographer (in the 40 dollar range). If someone could point me in the right direction that'd be great, I don't have anything against buying off eBay but I'd prefer it to be new. Thanks for your help.

Have a look at Velbon. You can probably get a reasonable aluminium tripod in this price range which will happily hold your camera and lens. Avoid the word "digital" in reference to tripods as this means "flimsy"! 2lbs isn't that heavy, so you should be able to get an aluminium or plastic one quite easily.

I've heard of people getting Amvona Dynatrans for 40 bucks or so...

They are GREAT TRIPODS for the stuff you're doing.
