I have the Slik 700DX legs and put a Bogen Ball head on them you can get the 700 legs for like $85 from B&H for just the legs if you would want a different head then what comes with the combo. the 700's work very well for there price I don't think you could ever come close to them with any thing else in the same price range and if your can let us know they are worth having.

I've also been looking for a cheap (but relatively decent) tripod.

Shortlisted the Velbon CX-540 and CX-560. They are around £30 (UK Sterling), and seem to be well rated. Might be worth a look...
