Trying to Achieve High-end Fashion Look

Hi all..

I was trying to achieve this look I see in the magazines, Do you think it worked?

I intentionally made the image warmer as an effect.. I am not sure if you will like it..

My only issue is are you going for a fashion feel or an actual fashion shot? In many ways this feels like fashion, except that the dress and necklace aren't particularly noticeable. For fashion you need to showcase the... fashion. Here you've created a dramatic portrait with a fashion feel, which is different than a fashion shot.

I think the shadows would work if the clothing wasn't black. The clothing needs to stand out in a fashion photo.

I still like the photo, maybe a little extra light to catch the necklace would really lift it.

i think to get the high end fashion look, you're going to need a high end photographer

Remember that in fashion you are selling both the cloths and the look. You need to make the cloths stand out.

The only thing that really bothers me is the fact that her underarm needs to be retouched. If she's gotta show it... smooth it out. :sillysmi:

To me, a white background and a big, inky black shadow do not go together well at all. Her dress just drifts right into that black hole on the lower left...we cannot see her outline...I do not understand this lighting approach. Unless perhaps you are working on a monitor that has the brightness set wayyyyyyyy too high...

Too dark. The dress gets lots. Fashion is all about the clothes. Plus it would be better if your studio was bigger to get back lighting. I would take her out into the city and find a nice urban location in a ritzy part of town. nice to see this model pop back up.

Also the side profile is not the best way to postion her face here. I would go for a nice 2/3 shot. her nose is a little on the longer side and a 2/3 shot would minimize it some, as opposed to here where the profile accentuates it more.

I think you gave a good try! I agree I think this dress needs different jewelry with it. I vision this dress with colorful jewelry and stilettos in an industrial area or against an old brick wall. Maybe even downtown or unique area. You have a beautiful model. Use your creativity and shoot her in several places. I have never shot fashion, but I look at a lot of magazines, and love clothes.

We were just trying to achieve the look, but it was not any real fashion job. Thank you all for noting that more care should have been taken on the details of the clothing if it was a fashion shot. Will try some fill next time..

I am quit sure that my screen is well calibrated and I see the shadows very well.. I wanted to achieve this dramatic high contrast look. As you and others mentioned, it is too much.. Will try some fill next time for sure.

My studio is big enough to do back lighting.. You can check the other threads with the same model backlit "athlatic" and "In Silver" that were taken in the same day.. It is just that we were trying to do something different and make her lean on the wall.. Will try 2/3 shots next time as I agree about the nose.

I have to look more into fashion magazines to have simular vision We were practicing studio lighting to improve on it.. Surely, I would like to make another session outdoors.. I hope I will some time soon..

I'm just a new guy, but I much prefer the 2nd edit to the first. She has such a beautiful shape and it shows up much better with less shadow.

I really like the pose and the way her hair is set.
