Tumblr is a scary place

Sure, we can avoid it, but the (shudder) "next generation" is not avoiding it.

I'm not worried about it to be honest, it's easy to be angsty and misunderstood as long as someone else is there to pay your bills for you.

But eventually like it or not reality will come along and smack them upside the head with a healthy dose of time to grow up or starve.

Pretty much happens with all of them eventually.

The one of the problems with the internet, is also one of the things that makes it great - you can reach out and meet a lot of people and personalities. If you're interested in mint-flavoured ice cream, there's a group out there that attracts others with the same interests. The flip side is that you can find a gathering of just about any kind of niche human behaviour, and within that gathering, the participants see themselves as "normal". When an outsider enters such a group, it can be a very disorienting experience. But humans have always been prone to delusion, self-blindness, and ideology (also known as simple solutions to complex issues), with the difference that the internet has allowed the easier gathering of the "birds of a feather".

I think the difference with Tumblr is that it has brought all of this...stuff...to mainstream notice. In the earlier days of the internet, most of these fringe communities had their own forums or sites that were somewhat separated from the rest of the internet in that you could not find them unless you were looking for them. With Tumblr, it's very easy to just stumble upon these communities.

So now many of them have become somewhat hostile in their push for acceptance, which is ironic, since their whole stance is "I don't need YOU to validate my beliefs, but I also want YOU to accept me so my beliefs will be validated and my feelings won't get hurt."

The headmates thing isn't quite as about social justice as it is about a community of disturbed young people, but many of the communities are so hostile towards anyone not in that group that they've become a parody (more than they initially were) of themselves.

Yeah most of it is very teenage behaviour though - many are teenagers just doing what teens have done for generations; the only difference is that now you can actually find and hear about it.

Some of its also extremists.

In general the core element of tumblr is attention seeking - many of the most extreme are also often those seeking the most attention (for whatever reason). Of course many twig early on that the more extreme; the more different and the more out there wacky nuts their views are the more attention they get. So it cultivates its own madness - however its important to realise that its often an extreme presentation of a persons individual personality and outside of it many are far more sane than they let on (though a handful really are that scary nuts).
