Two dollar studio

I shot this portrait of my Dad for a book that is being written about him. One light bulb in the basement and a piece of white cardboard. Shot it with my happy snap Canon T2i 70-200 2.8.

It's a little dark overall, I feel. I don't mind it so much on the face but it makes it very hard to tell what it is he is holding.

He's holding a Leica... unmistakable. M8 or 9? it looks like there's a "frame counter" ontop of that viewfinder.

I really like the portraits, great work

Hi is holding an M8, has used Leica's all his life, Ted Grant. fokker, I forgot to lighten it up, my lap to screen is really bright, on my Dad's computer it is also dark. mommy-medic it was lit this way on purpose, wasn't looking to light the whole face.

We use the same camera then! Once you go leica, you can't go back...

Yeah, I find that the lighting for this photo works perfect for what you're trying to achieve. It'd look mighty nice in black and white too, to match his style, I suppose. He's got great work!

I'm guessing that's as far away from his eye as that Leica has ever been! :lol:

I do wish his hands were all in the shot, BUT, that shot really is him. Nicely done.

We looked at a few with his hands completely in the frame and he liked this one better. It does look pretty good in black and white, which is what I think the final image will be.

Nice catchlights. Shows great character. The only reason I would like to see a smidgin more light on his right side is to bring a bit more detail of his right eye and his hair seems to be floating. But like you said, you edited on a very bright monitor and my monitor at work sucks so....

Maybe some subtractive lighting on his right side(hair only) so that it keeps the split lighting more even?
