two pics for C&C please

You are new at this? And you have pictures that come out looking this good? The only thing I would like to see are closer shots but these look kind of good as is! What camera/lens did you use?

The shots are nice and clear, great colors and the exposure looks good as well. Where these photos could use some help is with the composition. Look into the rule of thirds. Basically divide your view finder like a tic tac toe board. Place your subject where one of the lines intersect. Top right, top left, bottom left or bottom right. Horizons should be along the top third or the bottom third. Of course its just a guideline and there are plenty of times where great pictures result from breaking that rule.

I used a canon xsi and the kit lens. this was as close as I could get with that lens without falling off the dock.
I took about 50 pics that day, these were (I thought) the best of the bunch.

will pay more attention to the rule of thirds. I can probably crop differently to help achieve that.

Cropping #1 to get the bird bigger would help a lot.

I agree, I think your problem here was trying to take nature with ( I assume ) a 28-55 ( you said 'kit' - doesnt' help a lot

). Could do with at least something like a 70-300 for work like this.

The kit lens on an XSI is an 18-55.
