Two Studio Shots for C&C Plz

First one looks OK to me, I actually like it better than 2

First image is unavailable, second one looks nice

hmmm I see them both. Thanks sim.

Lighting is pretty flat, but if going for a 'glamour' type of shot, it would be acceptable, but #2 is too hot (lighting wise).

Significant difference in exposures between the two shots.

They look cut and paste to a white background. You missed the shadow in #1 between her legs.

The blacks are too black and do not show any detail in the tee-shirt or her hair in #1.

Research portrait posing.

Research portrait lighting.

It's not an easy gig, keep at it.

Thanks... Number 1 the background flash didn't reset in time for the shot so there was a shadow that I removed. I realized I missed part of it after I posted here. It has been corrected.

Thanks for the critique. Like I said this is my first so I am sure they will continue to get better.

The lighting is off. It looks like they were shot with a little point and shoot with the flash and then photoshoped to death so that she has a hair helmet on.

If you are using a point and shoot, try using natural light and turn off the flash

No this was not a point a shoot.

I like them, cute girl, but I think I would have went with a different backdrop, the white doesn't do it for me.

As stated before, the lighting seems flat, and harsh. However, i am no pro myself, so i probably couldnt do any better. What was the setup?

they look fine... not great... lighting is a little flat in both... and the contrast/saturation seem overdone a bit imo...

Sony A200 with Vivitar 383 on top. Small cheapo flash for the background. White roll paper as a backdrop cause it was handy and easy to use. And two steady on lights for ambient light/room light.

I know this set up isnt fantastic but I am working on upgrading it.

Perhaps Ill try retouching again without such harsh adjustments.

How does one make the lighting not look flat? Some of the comments I read in C&C threads sound like Randy Jackson telling an Idol contestant they were "pitchy." Just an easy thing to say when you just dont totally like something.

By creating dimensionality in the image. That means shadows. That means lighting placement. That means lighting ratios. The means separation from the background. That means light patterns. That means subject placement. That means research portrait lighting. That means research portrait posing.

First off the model was 17 and just a subject for a practice shoot. I could care less right now about portrait posing.

As for portrait lighting I used a combination of researching online and browsing this site which I found to be of little to no use at all since it is all opinion.

The set up was merely a practice run with hardly the right lighting equipment. As I mentioned the right equipment is coming. I mistakenly attempted to light all sides equally (is this what makes a picture flat?).

Taking the time to give a thought out C&C would be much appreciated as opposed to a short negative toned response.

kundalini thank you for taking the time to help out with this flat lighting issue.
