Anyways, here is a shot I took the other day of my friend Candace

Candice is green! The shot itself is not bad, but it needs the color balance corrected pretty desperately.

Her forehead and cheeks are a little blown, I think some color correction should do plenty good

If the first is for a facebook cover photo, you should have flipped the image, since the profile photo goes on the left.

In that first photo a couple of things trouble me.

First off, not sure what lens you used, but the perspective it gives makes her right hand look huge in comparison to her head.

The crop with the dead space on the right is a bit off putting, the way her shirt and the trees behind her fall almost make the overblown area on the right side look like another image frame stuck to the side of the picture of her.


In the second shot, there is some subtle odd color caste in the shadowed and not nearly blown areas of her face areas. I would do a bit of post work and fill that background highlight area in above her head and on the right side. Crop into a portrait format, not horizontal unless there is some type of environmental item you are showing. With the two images you've shown it is just a lot of dead space that competes for the attention of the subject.

Your composition is nice, but your processing needs a TON of refinement. Your color balance is badly off, and your retouching is way way too aggressive on this image, particularly the eyes and skin. On retouching, subtlety is critical. You want her to look perfect without looking "magazine cover messed-with" as I call it.

The good news is your exposure and focus seem to be spot on! I'm sure your client was thrilled, but we, your colleagues, are a lot harder to impress.

I also really like this photo, but I would pull in the crop on the right. I wouldn't have included that much haze on her face either.
