In my case I started a web site nearly 10 years ago devoted to World War II aviation. It has grown to over 50,000 files with 3,000 visitors a day. The most fulfilling part is the e-mails I get from people who come to the site looking for info on the various planes, either because they served during the WWII or have a family member that does. I get an immense amount of satisfaction out of running the site.
