Upgrading to Full Frame - Question about Cropped Lenses

the 50mm 1.8G covers full frame.

Yeah, I'm thinking I may have to rent. Seeing if I could avoid the hassle and cost.

Are you just buying the d800 because of a wedding ?

I recently turned my photography into a business (www.jdbphotography.org) and want (need) to upgrade my mount if I want to be competitive in my market.

My vote is buy the D800 and rent a mid range zoom and flash. Since you're a second shooter, you maybe able to borrow a lens from the primary shooter.

Then I would sell your entire DX set up and use that money to buy a 28-70mm 2.8. The 28-70mm is Nikon's old work horse before it was replaced by the 24-70mm. It's still a good lens and very affordable, I use one on my D800 and love it.

i like that idea. I'm think I'll keep the 50mm 1.8 (thanks for clearing that up Braineak), sell the rest, buy a D800, maybe with the money get a nice flash, and then rent a a 70-200 zoom lens. Thanks for your help, everyone!

I haven't touched my 50mm since buying the D800 and mounting my 28-70mm on it.

In DX mode the D800 uses only the middle portion of the image sensor that is the same size as an APS-C size image sensor: 4800 x 3200 px or 15.3 MP.

DX mode can be turned off, but while DX lenses cannot fully illuminate the 7360 x 4912, 36.2 MP of the entire D800 image sensor some of them will illuminate more than the APS-C sizein the middle of the image sensor and though larger the photos will have a heavy vignette. You could crop the vignette away.

So maybe buy that lens and rent a flash. Got it!
