TPF Noob!
I think the model for desktop security has certainly changed in the last couple of years. There's certainly less proliferation of virii via e-mail and more network and malware concerns than before with everyone "on" the internet most of the time.
From my standpoint, I use a variety of quality tools for prevention, but no AV software. I use Spybot to do the occasional scan, Windows Defender (new microsoft anti-spyware), TeaTimer to lock the registry and I have a little-used copy of Adaware which I very occasionally run if I'm feeling thorough. I haven't had a breach in the last two years using this and similar methods.
Oh, and I use a netgear wired router and Cisco PIX firewall at home. Pretty impossible to beat as I don't have any inbound services and silently drop all traffic. I also look at attachments and files before opening them!!
