I know her hands are cropped off. I took the shot this way. Rookie mistake. Live and learn.

#2 is much better, the upped exposure does a good job of contrasting with her shirt and the background. Besides the hands, which you already mentioned, its a good shot! Maybe a dat bright for the sun spot on her nose?

Light is okay but straight forward is not her best angle. I would have shot this with her on the wall at more of an angle with a 2/3 facial view instead. like this.....

You could also do it from the left side.

Why do you think this is not her best angle? Just wondering what you see that tells you that.

I believe it's a general rule that you don't shoot people straight on. It can make them look more blocky, instead of showing a nice shape. I'm still pretty new to posing, so I'm not very good at explaining the whys.

Thanks cowgirl. I've read the same thing. I know what you mean. What I remember is that, for women anyway, it can give the illusion of a better figure. Slims them down some as well. Lesson learned.

It definitely helps with slimming. I look really awful in straight-on shots (my dad's specialty), but can look pretty decent if it's taken from a bit of an angle. It doesn't even have to be a lot to make a difference. At least in shots of me, a straight on shot makes me very square and masculine, which isn't usually what you're after when shooting a girl.

I like it- have you tried cropping to a head and shoulders type shot?

I'm slowly learning about angles as well (and please don't cc the quality of these- they've gone from phone to Facebook to Flickr to photobucket before I could get the IMG code to even show the angle- I know the color is wonky in the straight-on shot too) anyway, posting to illustrate the separation of background when shot from an angle vs head on-

Even though she's against the "wall" in both shots, the angled one still separates background from subject. I don't know how the "rules" apply, just know I like that sense of separation, and surely I can't be the only one?

To be honest and completely objective, her nose is a bit on the larger side and the front view make accentuates this. All people have some features that may not be ideal and this is one of hers. But with some careful camera work and angles you can hide, reduce is probably a better term, things like this and still give an accurate representation of her face. A 2/3 view from the side would hide this just a bit so that it is not as distracting.

i would definitely not advise you to just scrap a front view but it is not always a persons best view. In a portrait you are trying to capture the best view. See some shots like of the little blonde girl above work straight on. But this is not always the case. This is an artistic interpretation as well so there are no set rules. Sometimes you just have to go with what you think feels right. Trust your instincts but try to remain critical at the same time. Easy task huh?

I hear what you're saying and after considering it, I totally agree. I have other shots of her that are angled like you described and it definitely works better. She's a really pretty lady and a different angle would just make her look that much better.

Agreed. Gorgeous woman. Make sure to give her some pics that will make her friends say, "Wow, you look amazing!" Then sit back and wait for the referrals. :thumbup:
