As a compositional technique, balance is important but not often discussed. It's one of those silent qualities that enhance a photo but is only obvious when it is missing. Interesting one this week! Just read all the links, but still not sure I get it, seems to be some contradictions.

I'll look at some posted example to help me understand before heading out with my camera.

What a great challenge. I embarked on a 1.5 hour journey this morning to capture this image because it bleeds balance, literally. For those who are challenged by the links supplied, lets make it simple. Alexander Calder is a master of balance, he performs it physically. As a photog, it is a challenge to crop his vision, I am so embarrassed to post my crop of his work. However, I think it may provide an ample demonstration of the challenge. I cut half of his masterpiece out, in doing so, I magnified the challenge.

This was taken the day before SquarePeg announced the challenge, so it doesn't count or I had a premonition. However, when I was taking this pic I was trying to balance the sky above the rocks and their reflection in the water. At the same time the left side of the pic feels 'heavy' to me compared to the right side. Like Tropicalmemories, I was a little confused after looking at the links for the challenge. So, is it balanced or not?

Ok, I know this is not what was intended but I was at the ballpark today, took this and couldn't resist. Tomorrow I will be flying sailplanes and have a couple ideas that might actually apply.

It does convey a sense of balance...

Well, my thoughts are that any well composed photo is "balanced". The manner in which it's balanced can vary significantly though. Someone might place the "subject" in the upper left corner, but the remaining negative space can create a "balance" within the composition. Light can also create or impact balance, as the brightest object within the frame will draw the eye more than something which has more subdued luminosity. I'm not sure if you are aiming to narrow the definition of balance, but if you are you may wish to reconsider. I think it would be interesting to see how people redefine balance with respect to composition. In fact, the lack of balance can be quite engaging and could be considered within the scope of the assignment.

Haven't been around much for the last two weeks -real life has been a bugger - this week was looking good, but I have managed to catch a nasty cold which is kicking my behind. I did however find a link on balance that has some pretty straight forward explanation.
