Photography classes, an idea of what you want for the end result, a vision

To " look like you know what your doing", a fresh haircut and decent shoes are critical. M

With the change you can rent some gear for a weekend.

Derrel has great advice so just search him on these forums and you will learn a lot.

Off camera flash screams " protog".

If you want to look like you know what you are doing.......
Keep your current equipment and hire an enterage of lighting, hair, make up and go on site in the busiest public location and take pics of someone sitting on a bench while shouting a lot and looking belligerent.
Hand out a few biz cards and voila a new pro is born. Dont forget to include a middle name like John "got the shot" Smith.

I know there are a bunch of Nikon shooters around here, but, nothing gives more credibility than a big white, ugly lens. ;)

yes, most professional photographers use Canon because .... the pics look better?
the ugly white lens?

If you are paying a model to sit for a portrait, they won't care what you use to photograph them. They are paid to model and will do that whether you draw, paint or photograph them with a playskool camera.

Yeah I heard back from one and she doesn't seem all that concerned. I'd like something decent though that can handle dimly lit concerts and action sports as well. Is the 5500 enough of a step up from the 3300 for that? Anybody want to upsell me on it.

People seem really happy with the 7200 but thats a big step up. I got a 450$ bike and figured 8 to 1k would have been a good price point but then you have to go to 1200$ If the 7200 were 1k I'd feel better. Or the 5500 and another lens.

Where should I buy one from? Online, dept store, electronics store? How long will the battery charge last under normal to heavy use? Can all these Dseries switch an extra battery? Canon has a 1k version the 60 or 70D. Is that comparable to the 5500 or 7200?

They all look similar up the line. Are there any other boutique or Indy manufacturers with competitive pricing and similar products?

Thanks again.

Online shopping can be good for general research, but unless you know how to read between the lines, you're liable to end up with not such a good deal after all. For instance; some retailers have taken to selling "gray market" merchandise, which means that they might not have a U.S. warranty. The camera will work just fine up until the day that it doesn't, then you have to depend on some online company in some distant land to repair your camera at a reasonable cost.

The local B&M store might charge a little more, but your'e dealing with a local person who has a reputation to uphold. And you can hold the camera, try out the various controls, ask questions, get after market support, etc.

I bought mine at Best Buy online. They didn't stock the model that I wanted.

I don't know what you mean by "heavy use". My battery will last for months because most of the time the camera is sitting on a shelf. A full charge allows me to snap away for a couple of days, but I'm not running it in continuous, or trying to run an entire model's portfolio in a few hours.

Nikon D3300 offers you very good low light performance, the sensor on the D5500/D7200 is better but not by much.
If you are strapped for cash the D3300 is plenty of camera, it will be MUCH more logical to invest in good lenses then better body to have significant effect on your pictures.
Getting a Nikon 50mm 1.8G will help you much more then getting a higher body.
The most important thing though to get good results is improving your skills, learn the basics and then move on by getting better and better.
I use my Nikon D3300 as a second body shooting events and portrait photography but I use top of the line glass for that.

To get good pictures the importance is in this order (in my opinion)

1.Skills
2.Accessories (lens, lighting.......etc)
3.Camera body

The D3300 and a cheap wireless transmitter and receiver to use with a flash unit. Hire your model and hire an assistant to hold the flash.

Purpose is mostly for portraits of models for my own enjoyment. So the iphone would be fine for that but if i'm paying something and convincing them to come then me taking pictures with my phone might be a little too obvious and not instill great confidence in the models

Not being ugly here but if you have no experience, and no equipment why are you hiring models??

If you buy from amazon, you can be sure it's the real deal and they will refund or exchange in the event that it is not as advertised, or if it is defective or unusable in any way, so you can't go wrong there. Just make sure it's prime and it includes free shipping if you are a member and these days, who isn't? :)

You just need to think outside the box here.

Not sure if that's a real question but you must be a woman. I've had shoots with gf's and friends before and buying a D3300 on the spot means little to me. I could probably get away with using a cell phone. I have no attractive young women who will bat their eyes at me at the moment or maybe I do and don't need a model. I'm trying. Testing the waters to see how difficult it is to find people on my own before buying something.

Leaning towards the 5300, for only $100 more you get internal wifi and swivel screen in case she wants to look at herself and I can transfer pics and see the monitor on my phone. Can get $50 off at Best Buy if I buy a lense too. People seem to think the 50/ 1.8g is worth it in reviews.

The 50mm/ 1.8g has no zoom? Can I get a bird at medium distance with stock lense or what is that one good for if I have the 50? Noob question but I also couldn't find any zoom button on most versions and what I did find only seemed to have 3 or 4 set distances on the floor model. Do injust not know how to zoom or is it only these set distances? My p&s had s full range of zooming.
