What do u think??

Spot AF on a Canon may not be the same naming convention as the focus points on a Nikon. I follow what the OP is saying. What I don't get is why at F14 the hat is in sharper focus than the face. Wonder if the lens needs a microadjustment of if one of the AF assist points were enabled and took over.

If you're using 19 point AF, you still have the control to choose your specific focus point from the 19. Move the red focus box around till you hit your mark. I run around with my finger on that thing, this way I never miss the spot when I'm flipping my camera side to side.

So what if your taking a pic of like three people? What focus should u use to make sure u get them all in focus?

Are you using a Canon 7D? Spot Focus will work as will the single focus point ( one step above spot focus, but I can't remember what it is referred to ). I would avoid letting the camera focus for you, it typically does a terrible job at guessing.

You still use the single point over one of the subjects, you just make sure either 1) all subjects are in the same plane of focus or 2) you increase the depth of field to capture all subjects sharply.

I think it is utterly amazing Canon's 7D user's manual recommends using Evaluative metering for portraits.
I think if you are using all 19 focus points to focus that shot, you don't understand how auto focus, focus, or DoF work.
I think the white balance is off.
I think the light was to high, and and to far back, making the important parts of the facial mask to dark.
I think the white fibers in front of the mouth should have been addressed before the shutter was released.
I think the photo needs a mat and a frame.

The plane of focus is always parallel to the image sensor.

Using multiple focus points can't work if you have multiple subjects at different distances from the image sensor and you want them all sharply focused. In that case you need to control the DoF.

Ya I had a total what the heck am I doing day!! Ugh ...read read read....that's all I've been doing! & I need to do way more. I agree with everything.....I was doing some reading on white balance and using gray cards...I'm a bit lost. For studio shots your suppose to have your camera to flash, right? Sorry for all the dumb questions.
