I’m new to this. So be honest I have my flame suit on ;) Tips, Comments, Criticism, likes, dislikes… I would really appreciate whatever you want to give me! This was from an outdoor shoot this past weekend

I'm not sure about the selective coloring but here is something for sure to watch out for (I have to keep reminding myself not to do this too). His toes are cut off. I think it would be better all around if we saw all of his feet OR if it was cropped in tighter. Also, would be better with a different angle on his face...this is a tough one because we don't see much of his expression.

Im a BIG fan of selective coloring :( I don’t know why, it always draws my attention (: And I know I was so upset that I cut his toes off. I didn’t plan on this even being a shot to work with, I tend to use continuous shooting a lot and this is just one that i happened to grab. It was a good angle when he was actually looking, but I get what you’re saying about him looking down and not seeing it. Thanks !!!

I tend to not be a fan of it. So maybe it's just personal preference. I think what bothers me most about this picture is that all the unfocused eggs are colored too and they distract from the focus egg. Maybe if just that one egg was focused I'd like it better.

You are correct in that it attracts attention... the problem is that it attracts attention away from the subject. From your composition, it looks like you intended your subject to be the boy, even though his face isn't really visible. Kinda depends on what you're going for. I don't think it works for this composition.

I am a fan of selective coloring when it helps to pull more emotion from the photo. I agree that all of the balls being colored they are all pulling for my attention. It distracts from the main focal point, which to me is the boy with the ball in his hand. Perhaps coloring the ball in his hand would look a bit better?

Also I noticed the toes are cut off and I'm kind of tilting my screen in hopes to see that cute curious face. I would have tried to get a bit lower.

This was a cute catch :D

Highlights are overexposed, along with the cut off toes.

You can try cropping tighter to make it appear that the cutting of limbs was intentional. At the moment it looks like a mistake.

Selective colour is something that beginners think is great, but as you get more advance you will wonder why the hell you even thought it was good. I have always hated it

The selectively colored egg he is so intently focused on, makes me focus on it too.

I like it.

I like this image, I really don't mind anything that is creative. Like Bitter says, my focus goes to the egg he's holding.

I want to add, that while eyes draw attention, and are typically focused on, hands do the same. That's also why I feel this works well.
I also like the colored eggs on the side. They create a triangle with the one in his hands, which repeats the traingle made by his head and arms, and his legs.

I also quite like the selective colouring here. I might've de-saturated the outside eggs a smidge to lessen their impact, but that's all. I am also drawn to the egg in his hands, I want to see what's inside! It is also a shame about his toes being chopped off but apart from that, nice.

Considering the above comments, I look at the image differently. Particularly to Bitter's observation of the triangle of eggs (sounds like a new photog rule  ). It does give the image stability, but I still feel a disconnect with the boy and feel like I'm overly drawn to the color, but the full-body composition tells me I should be more interested in the boy. I mean, if it were my kid, I'd be happy to print it out and put it on the wall. It's a nice shot. Maybe they're a bit too saturated for me.

I find my eyes are attracted to both the egg I his hand and also the tree in the background.
My question would be is this shot level? Was it intentionally angled. Everything seems to lean to camera right.
Keep it up.
