What equipment do you take on trips ?

If you are goin on a trip that will be a combination of urban and a bit of nature and considering you are going to be on your feat most of the day so weight is an issue you need to consider what equipment will you take ?

I guess it depends if I am going for a specific shot or general picture taking. I tailor my gear to where I will be going.

If its dark out I will bring lighting gear, if its indoor only I will leave the 70-300 behind, if im packing light it will be just the 50 1.8.

But it looks like you have indoor, far away, and up close in all those things. If it was me I would being my 24-70 and 70-300 so I had a broad range to work with and use my sling bag to ease of carrying.

I have three bags. The Manfrotto Veloce VII backpack is my bigger one holds all my lenses, a Samsonite sling bag which looks very much like the lowpro 350 which hold two of my lenses and a Nikon shoulder bag for my smallest only hold one lens.

One body, one speedlight, one tripod. CPOL, 1, 2, & 3 stop ND & G-ND, remote release, cleaning kit, spare batteries & cards, hand-held GPS, UWA zoom, normal zoom, short tele zoom, macro lens and TC. nb... that's not what I would bring, that's what I do bring... that, a bottle of water, some snacks, etc, adds up to about 25 pounds. I use the Lowepro Trekker series backpacks... works very well.

Depends on how much weight you want to carry...

But 2 primes (28mm & 50mm) or a general purpose zoom + tripod + extra batteries is all you really need.

Although some of it does depend on your camera and what you like to shoot

I( travel in a 38' motorhome so I take a lot, including a kitchen sink. When I am out I use an electric scooter to get around so I still don't have to carry anything on my back. I can shoot anything I can get my scooter close to. I will have everything from a Minolta 16mm camera to 6X6 MF.

Everything except my tripod. With the caveat that I don't have much kit...yet.
Body, jack of all trades zoom lens, 50mm prime, spare battery, a few wipes, 2 cards. All fits in a small camera bag but if I'm out and about then camera and zoom on a shoulder strap, everything else in pockets.

Great replies and good info, I am trying to see what other people carry so I know what is a must and what can stay at home.
I will go to Chicago with the family for 4 days to see the city and knowing my wife we will leave the hotel early in the morning and be back late at night so weight is a huge issue and once my legs and back start to hurt I run out of patience even to look at the camera so I want to get a nice balance between what I simply must and what I can leave.
I think I will take my D7000 with the new zoom I got the 24-84mm VR+my 50mm 1.8 prime.
My flash is on route from Hong Kong so I doubt I will get it before the trip so that solves me the problem deciding if to bring it or not.
I will not bring my tripod, it will be in my way and I doubt anyways they will let me open the tripod and take picture in a museum (both the security in the museum and my family because they will be impatient).
So I think this will be enough to "schlep" on my back.

In my carry-on, I take 5D MKIII. If I will be driving once I reach destination, I will also take the 40D. Always the 24-105 and 70-200. Almost always the 50. The 90 if I anticipate the need for macro. Flash. Lots of batteries and memory. Usually leave the tripod at home as well as all cables and triggers.

At destination, if I'm on foot, I put one lens on camera and the other in my Tamrac lens changer case, which also holds extra batteries, memory and a couple of gallon size ziplocs.

I wouldn't know offhand which feats of darering-do I'd be up to but as far as being on my feet all day on a tourist type holiday then I'd likely just take my X100 along for the walk.

Considering the 'lots of walking' issue, one camera body with lens mounted, and one other lens in a Lowepro lens case big enough to carry either lens, but not both. I did just that 6 months ago in downtown Chicago with a 60D, 24-105L and 16-35L. And an 82mm CPL with step down ring to 77mm for the 24-105.
