What's new

What makes you decide to...

if i have any motivation to remove my hands from the trackpad to the keyboard and exert effort.

Sometimes I'll give C&C if I think all the other advice given so far has missed something or is trying to eliminate something I like about it. Sometimes I see a really good idea that's just been poorly executed and I think deserves to be tried again. Most times I don't because I have nothing new to add.

When I have something to add.
When I have learned something from the poster's mistake.
When I have the time.
When I'm avoiding homework, housework, husband, kids, etc.
When I see something different than what everyone else has said.
When it's a poster that I've followed for a long time.

Usually any combination of these things contribute most to whether or not I'm C&Cing. Especially #4.

To be fair and honest, every time I try to give any C&C, I usually end up making a fool out of myself and show just exactly how much I don't know.

Given this fact, a smart man would keep his mouth shut.

Fortunately, I'm not a smart man.

I don't give C&C often (mainly because I don't really know what I talking about) but when I do, I learn as much from a bungled C&C as I do from a bungled photo.

It's all about the brainfood.

regardless if you give CnC and its wrong, someone will correct you with something thats right and you can learn. You stop keeping up with the times and being the best photographer you can be when you stop taking advice. Even the pros should take advice from beginners and obviously the other way around too. There are always fresh new innovative ways for doing things and you should always give your .02 when you feel like it and always take it.

Similar to others, I'll contribute if I have something to offer. Doesn't happen a lot since there's much I don't know.

Technical stuff aside, anyone can have an opinion. So, if an opinion just needs to be said, and it's not piling on (too much), then I'll C&C.

Also, as misstwinklytoes said, avoidance of daily activity also is a big factor.

I lurk a lot on this forum. I wish I had the knowledge to offer advice, but rarely do I feel justified to do so.

And although I may not feel qualified to leave an opinion it's always nice to hear from people who do know what they are doing. I've learned a lot by reading 'how to correct yourself' type of answers that are left for people.

Not real fond of the 'Who's penis is bigger' kind of topics but I tend to skip over the nonsense when needed. :lmao:

I generally give cc when the subject interests me, whether it be a project I'm looking to do, currently doing or have done and have experience in. Its enjoyable to me to see someone grow with time and be a part of it. To watch that lightbulb go off in their head. To work someone through a difficult situation. To add humor to lighten the subject.
I try to give people a starting point and let them take the reins.

99% of the time Im on TPF its at work and if the image is posted from flickr or photobucket I dont get to see it due to websense. I try to comment on all the other images that are not websensed at work. From here on out I will try to remember the PIN method when commenting on Images and maybe giving it a 1-10 rating for fun.

Depends on my mood really. I used to CC a lot of images, but when I noticed I was not getting the same respect back in my posts, I started to not CC as much.

Lately, it's whatever catches my eye, either EXCELLENT or HORRIBLE. Strad summed it up the best though, I can't disagree with anything he said.

I'll usually C&C when the OP really seems to want it, or asks for a specific type of C&C, such as, "How does my white balance or skin-tone appear?" or, "Do the highlights look blown to you?" That type of more complete C&C request shows me the OP is wondering about something specific, and working on the process diligently. Also, if the OP seems like he or she is actually accepting the C&C's and not just rationalizing away all the C&C suggestions, I'm more likely to offer my own C&C. Also, I usually give C&C only on one or two pictures, OR just select one out of the eight offered and work on that one shot that best illustrates one thing or another.

The critique pendulum has been interesting for me to follow.3 years ago, there was continuous, harsh cc.to the point of comments becoming personal, and not necessarily about the photograph.
now there is very little if any cc. on most forums....hopefully a happy middle can be reached. It will make the forum a stronger tool for helping everyone.

as to the question,I mostly only know wildlife type photography.........Thats what I try to help with....
