What should I buy next

I currently own a Nikon P510. I really like it, such a great zoom for shooting at baseball games. I really just take photos for fun, but I have slowly been moving up to nicer cameras. I am currently considering a Nikon 1 (and buying the second lens). Is this a good next step? What would you suggest?

What does the P510 NOT do that you want it to do?

it's great, but it's getting pretty old. My birthday is coming up, usually my treat to myself is a new camera.

For getting good images with flexible systems you need either Mirrorless or DSLR
Nikon 1 is a cute system but it is a very controversial system, some love it and some don't.
Sadly Nikon 1 is not very respected by many and it does have a relatively small sensor (1" size).

For sports and wild life photography from Nikon I would look at the D5300 which has a fairly good auto focus system.
If you are shooting outside where there is plenty of light I would advise adding a telezoom lens for close ups.
Nikon has 3 basic lenses in the basic scale of lenses

1.Nikon 55-200mm VR
2.Nikon 55-300mm VR
3.Nikon 70-300mm VR

If you can afford a higher model in Nikon's lineup then the new Nikon D7200 is designed to be a very capable sports camera, to be more exact its a general use camera with very strong sports capability, good burst rate, good size buffer and excellent auto focus system.
But the D7200 will cost more then the D5300 which probably be good enough for you.

If you are keened on mirrorless then the Sony a6000 is a pretty good camera with a good AF system so its a possibility.

Last option is a super zoom, Panasonic FZ1000 is a nice camera with pretty good sports capabilities but overall its not as good as a DSLR or the Sony a6000
