what surface creates reflective effect

What is the surface the lamp is placed on to produce this reflective effect?

Thanks for your reply - but are you sure?

I've read (have zero experience) that mirrors creates a sort of double reflection, because the mirror part is on the underside of the glass, and so there is one reflection cast from the top of the glass and one from the bottom...

So I thought it was either white plexiglass, transparent plexiglass or white vinyl?

Again, I have no experience, just trying to educate myself, so thanks again for your input!

Looks like the reflection might have been added later.

This is direct from the original DNG file (I don't know what that mean, but at least I was smart enough to demand the original files) so the reflection was not added later, though it would be a smart alternative for me, if I can't figure out how to reproduce it.

Perspex is highly reflective but without the double reflection you get with glass. I suspect it's that.

Yeah, I've been recommended that book before, and it is currently on it's way to me from amazon. However, I can't very well show a book a picture and ask what it is... that's where you guys come in!

So, it is some sort of plexiglass. Check. But is it clear or white? Could I go to Home Depot and get a clear sheet of plexiglass and create this effect, or does it have a special quality that I need to order from a specialty shop?

Looks translucent at least. You can see through it to the table on that shot. Probably clear.

papawneil1 - what would you say if I told you that I now have confirmation that he used a plexiglass? What I don't know is what kind of plexiglass (or whether that is important) and what - if anything - he put under the plexiglass.
