What's new

When do i know if i need to charge for my services???

Most of them were shot when i was still in my first few months that's why most of them are crap.

Then why don't you post five of your very best here.. and lets see what people have to say... (and that is a BullSh!t thing to say.. when you INVITED us to look at them!) ;)

But i cant recall a photo i took with top of heads cut off?

BabyMaria, Joeboy, and Jennifer for a start...

Those cut off heads were part of a close up shots. I meant to crop it intentionally.
If it doesnt work, i need to make an effort to make it work next time.

I dont think i must post 5 of my best, i don't like to show off.

Thanks for the crit. I need them.

 not sure if being arrogant..... or sarcastic....

Your shots were really hit or miss with me. Either I really liked them or some of them just put me off. You never know when to charge. Even great photographers never knew when they were good enough until they finally started charging. If you want to find out then do it.

Why shoot in horizontal format.. and cut heads.. and have a massive amount of crappy background, when you could shoot vertical and not cut heads... and reduce the crappy background? Hint Hint!

If you don't want to post your "best".. then don't be telling us the stuff you do give us to look at is old and when you were just starting out. That is all we have to go on! Trust me.. you wouldn't be showing off! ;)

If these are your best shots, then you aren't ready for two reasons.
1) people who think these are good will want you to perform at this level whatever the conditions - and these are mostly shot in reasonably favorable conditions.
2) they just aren't that good - they are new-guy-with-a-dslr good.

I think that I am a reasonably decent shooter and I wouldn't consider doing a wedding or other indoor party because I don't have the skills to use flash and I'm missing some vital equipment.

I just read this.
and really needed to say 'Wow'

Bestbuy is training their employees to stoke ego's before the new photographer gets past the cash register with the new DSLR

Perhaps I spoke too soon.
Perhaps, that is the reason that some of the most vociferous critics here on TPF never post pictures themselves; they don't want to show off.
Perhaps I was totally wrong in my assessment of them.

No, not likely.

I'm gonna go against the grain and say this regarding getting paid for services...

It is totally up to you. If you feel like you should get paid, then ask for payment. The real question is, how much do you charge? I look at it this way, my time isn't free. If I'm going to spend a couple of hours on a photoshoot and countless hours editing, I'm gonna make a little something. Granted I will not charge anywhere near what a professional would charge but my time isn't free. If not for the photos, I'm gonna at least get paid for my time.
I think the main thing is that you and the client agree upon a price and that they understand you're not a pro hence why you're charging them significantly less than a pro would. If they're ok with this, why not get paid?
I really don't understand all this "I don't charge yet" business. On the flip side, I do think that if you're going to charge, you have to at least feel confident in your work first.

and don't let your light stand fall on your client or have them trip on a light chord, if you don't have a little business insurance they may possibly own you and everything you have.

I would say when people are willing to pay for your photos AND when you actually think your photos are worth charging $$ for.

A girl at work asked if I'd shoot a bridal party and asked what I would charge. I laughed and said I would shoot it for free because I consider it practice, I'm no pro! She said I take great photos and still wanted to pay me. I'm taking a pedicure in exchange. Lol -- I know I'm not to the point here I would charge. But if you truly feel like you are there, then go for it. Live and learn?

Youre trying to sell this. Showing off is a requirement. It is called advertising. People see it and if they like it then they buy it. And if you posted the pictures people would give you real critiques which you say you want.

Holy crap. This is getting out of hand.
First of all you guys misunderstood me. What i meant was, i dont like to show off my best have because i think I DON'T have a best 5.
It's not worth showing.

Crits are alright but insult is a different ballgame.

I do not try to be arrogant nor sarcastic, ALL I'M ASKING WAS WHEN DO I NEED TO CHARGE FOR MY SERVICES. That's all.

But anyway, i respect all of you here and very thankful for the opinions. I dont care if it's negative, if it will make me better, i'm all good.
