Where would you go!?

This summer I pretty much have a free pass to go anywhere in the world for a week. I have NO idea where I want to go! Obviously I want to go somewhere that would have lots of great opportunities for amazing photographs. So if you could go anywhere in the world where would you go?

Rome, to see the colosseum. Extremely interesting. Heres a link with a bit of information. I did a project on it way back in grade 8 and have wanted to go there ever since. They used to actually flood the main "floor" of the colosseum and have mock naval battles. Its crazy really. This was massive building was finish in 80 AD! And they could do all this. Pretty amazing if you ask me. Here is a link with a bit of info on it if you havn't heard much about it.

Whatcha like to see and take pics of?

That is the most important question - cause some of us are going to jump up and say places like Kenya, Alaska, Iceland, NewZealand whilst you might be far far more interested in urban areas or historical. You might even be more interested in people rather than animals or buildings or landscapes.

I don't see why you would wanna take photos of things (like the colosseum) that have been shot for millions of times. whatever happened to originality.

It's a fun question, but the answers probably aren't going to help you narrow down your choices; in fact, I suspect the myriad of different answers will only serve to throw MORE choices into the mix for you. Everyone has such different ideas of their "dream" places to go--some (me) love the tropical isles, some would rather head to Alaska or Iceland, some love the city and its light, some the wilderness...and on and on. Only YOU know what you love--pick three or four places you'd like to see and then just choose one.

For me, my bucket list is filled with places I'd love to see: Ireland (the home of my ancestors, from not that far back); almost ANYWHERE tropical, the Galapagos Islands, the Azores, Panama (my grandfather lived and worked in the Azores and in Panama for years in the 40s and 50s and I'd love to revisit some of the photos he took), Israel and the Holy Land (but I really detest getting shot at or blown up...), Belize, Australia.... once I've visited those places, I'll probably have added more.

You DO realize how contradictory that is, to suggest the Northern Lights because EVERYone wants pictures of that, and then wonder why you'd want to take pictures of the colosseum because EVERYone takes pictures of it...

The answer to why *I'd* want pictures of something that has already been photographed by millions of others--because none of those other millions of photos are MY photos. And because it's not JUST about getting the picture; it's about making the memory of seeing it for yourself.

I tend to enjoy architecture photography, particularly old stuff, and I've always thought it would be cool to visit Egypt, or anywhere along the Mediterranean really. As far as landscapes and beautiful views go, Rio and Thailand have also stood out to me personally.

If I was in your position, Rebecca, I'd consider what types of photos I'm most interested in, and more importantly, how easily (or not) accessible I want the photo opps to be. For example landscape/cityscape photos would require advanced planning and more admin/setup time to get to the desired location at the desired time of day. But if I was going for ancient architecture then I could go to Cairo (just as an example) and walk out my hotels front door for a 1 hour photowalk at any random time of day and probably come back with hundreds of photos.

So I think it comes down to, what types of photos are you going after, and how much advanced planning / scouting do you want to do?

Besides that there are no northern lights in the summer. It's daylight almost 24/7. (Graduated from UAFairbanks, AK)


Do I have to pick just one? Europe-the old castles fascinate me. Greece-the ruins there fascinate me and so does the water and the beaches and the cliffs and... PROBABLY if I had to pick one it'd be Greece.

Sardinia. Especially in the Springtime.

Helsinki, Moscow, Warsaw, Berlin are interesting. Berlin-Warsaw-Moscow is a night train journey. Cheap flights to Helsinki from Moscow and Warsaw.

I would find somewhere that is isolated from main stream culture so you could capture their culture and lifestyle. I guess I am thinking South America/Central America where you could get rainforests, Mayan/Aztec Ruins, and some local culture.

I would also say Africa but unless you have so long glass I think it would be hard to capture any of the animals. At the same time Alaska would be amazing as well....just make sure not to go in the dead of summer because there won't be any sunrises or sunsets or really any golden hours...well I am assuming that is the case.
