which camera?

Hi folks, looking for a bit of advice/opinions, i have a canon sx40hs which does much of what i want but have now decided its time to delve in the dslr scene, for the moment i just want an entry level one, probably a kit and a decent 300mm telephoto lens. Ive been looking at the nikons 3100, 3200 & 5100 also canon 550d &600d but which one..
I just need that kick over the line for which one of these

i know the basics thanks, just want some ideas on these cameras,dont want to spend fortunes just a decent camera that i can add better quality lenses at a later date

wildlife mainly, budget not really an issue within reason in the 100's as this is just a hobby

My d5100 works amazing but I'm also looking into a d7000 for low lighting

The d7000 isn't going to be a whole lot better in low light. The 5100 and 7000 have a similar (if not the same) sensor. You probably wouldn't even notice the difference. The d700 on the other hand would be a noticeable difference

yes there's a big differnce in the price to lol out of my range i'm afraid,i think i may opt for the 550d or the nikon 5100 not sure which though,seems little or nothing between them, what about i s on the nikon lenses? are they as good as canons

As a cannon user, why would you now want to move over to nikon? IMO, both offer good range of cameras. There is no one model that is superior to another. What you pay is what you get. Otherwise the manufactorer would be shooting his own feet.

The newer models would of course feature more advanced technology but you need to know the so called newer technology is of any value to you. Camera is like cars and hifi. One more knobs here and there may mean nothing to most.

I'm not loyal to one or the other to be honest , just happen to have had canon, i want a good bodied camera that will last, i dont need a lot of the features etc even on my sx40hs it has things i never use, actually i'm thinking now the nikon 3100 as its cheaper and can add the better lenses

For wildlife, the lens is going to be as, if not more important, than the camera particularly if you will be shooting in low light situations.

The genre 'wildlife' covers a very wide range, from specialty Macro lenses or lens acessories to shoot small insects, to long reach telephoto lenses to shoot birds in flight or big horn sheep.

Pretty much any brand or model of DSLR in the price range you're looking at will do the job. No doubt there are slight differences between the makes and models, but they are more nuance than major differences.

broken record and all...but..as far as Nikon goes budget wise,
get a used D90. not very expensive right now, more features than the entry level 3xxx or 5xxx series, will auto-focus any nikon AF lens, and is overall just a great camera if you cant afford the D7000. I would recommend a D90 over a D5100 any day, especially if you plan on getting at all serious with your photography.

Thank you will look into that, what about decent lens? this is where i am a bit lost lol, not looking for pro lenses or anything but something that can do a good job at a reasonable price.

Just looking at some d90's but outside my budget,what you pay in $'s we pay in £'s so still expensive over here even second hand going for the same price's as new ones, back to the cheaper options

Thats what i was thinking, its like my sx40 i barely use most on it, its the zoom i use most and does a great job providing nothing moves too (as a bridge i dont expect too much) all i need is a decent camera body that will take the appropriate lens,thats where i want to upgrade and see what i can do but one step at a time
