Stay away from Nikon. They are a horrible company. My D80 just died and they did nothing to help fix it. It is now a $900 paperweight. Ask any small camera shop how they are treated compared to Canon. I am getting a Canon T2i or T3i to replace it.

well you've had a bad experience but............still deciding never had a problem with my canons and i'm sure many will say the same with nikons but thats off the post subject

I just want to add these 2 points. It would be advisable to get a camera with the builtin motor type. You would have a better range of lenses to select. Afterall, camera body is just the starting point.

2 point, ability to switch between ISO, S, A, M priority and other settings are equally important. Some models require you to go back to menu. Check them out.

D80 is a 6 year old camera. It had a decent life of say

I never really understood this. You still get focus confirm on these lenses. They're still perfectly useable in my opinion

Try nikon and canon camera in a local store, go for what feels better.

As for lens, 70-300's are pretty cheap.

broken record and all...but..as far as Nikon goes budget wise,
get a used D90. not very expensive right now, more features than the entry level 3xxx or 5xxx series, will auto-focus any nikon AF lens, and is overall just a great camera if you cant afford the D7000. I would recommend a D90 over a D5100 any day, especially if you plan on getting at all serious with your photography.

I agree. I used D90 would be better than the small body cameras....

jessops have a good deal with 2 lenses on the 550d and had made my mind up then you throw the d90 at me, LOL will have to look at that now

yes thats whats put me off the d5100 dont like having to keep going to the menu to change settings canons far better
