Hello Everyone Once again,

I know this is a repetitive and same old question by most of the Noobs, I do searched for many answers and learned many things too regarding lens from this Forum. I already have a Canon EOS 550D Camera with 18-55mm Kit Lens and 70-300mm. Through searching and learning from this forum, I realized that 50mm prime lens is a must for quality. Other than this, Can some one guide me what kind of Lenses are suitable for the following type of photography.

- Landscape / Cityscape
- Portrait
- Domestic Animal
- Wild Animal
- Automobiles / Objects
- Macro ( Bugs etc)

Ef-S 10-22mm F/3.5-4.5 USM for landscapes, cityscapes, family shots in tight spaces, automobiles in car shows,
Ef-S 17-55mm F/2.8 IS USM or Ef 24-70mm F/2.8 L USM for portraits, general walkaround, flora, still life, weddings, events, candids, domestic animals
Ef 70-200mm F/4 L IS USM for portraits, wildlife, general walkaround, flora, still life, candids
Kenko extension tubes or 100mm F/2.8 USM macro for macro shots

The 50mm is fantastic for portraits as well as automotive. Shooting domestic animals (like dogs and cats I assume?) would be similar to portraiture in which case the 50mm would be good for that as well.

3 things checked off.

(As always, there are better lenses for each type of thing, but IME the 50mm is very capable for those subjects I listed)

As a very very rough guildline I would say:

- Landscape / Cityscape - something wide angle so a 10-20mm for example
- Portrait - regular portrait focal lengths can be anything but I'd say 24mm to 135mm is the common range I see people using
- Domestic Animal - a mix of portrait and wildlife depending how you're taking the photos
- Wild Animal - anything 300mm or longer - for birds 400mm or longer.
- Automobiles / Objects - no idea though I see things from wide angle all the way through to telephoto for cars alone.
- Macro ( Bugs etc) - pretty much anything that is a prime (single focal length) lens with "macro" in the name. Ideally starting with 90mm or longer for insects

That is at least a bare bones starting point to work from - however each of those areas is full of more complex answers based not just on how much money you can spend, but also on how you want to work, how you do work and what kind of situations you are in.
For example:

Landscape - wide angle lenses might be dominant, but many will also use expensive tilt-shift lenses as well. In addition 70-200mm lenses can prove popular for those that like to pick out select features in a land/city scape rather than showing a wide fuller view of the whole surroundings. This is without considering the merits of methods such as photo stitching (taking a series of photos and stitching them together to give a final work that has a larger angle of view than the lens used to take the shots).

You've got somewhere to start from, but you'll need to do more research into each interest area to get the finer details, methods and ideas out.

Thank you Friends..,

As of now, I have purchased the Following

  • Canon Lens EF 50mm 1:1.8 II
  • Canon Compact - Macro Lens EF 50mm 1:2.5
  • Canon Close-up Lens 500D
After the purchase, I realized that I would have gone with Macro 100mm, Anyways, 50mm will work for another 6 months for me, very happy with it.

- Portrait - any prime makes a good portrait lens pretty much or 24-70 2.8 would also be a good choice as it can be used for a walk around lens and pretty much every day lens.
- Domestic Animal - 24-70 f2.8 or 70-200 f2.8 + a teleconverter or a 80-400mm lens; in some cases thats not enough and a 500mm or more lens is needed. it all depends.
- Wild Animal - 70-200 2.8
- Automobiles / Objects - 24-70 2.8
- Macro ( Bugs etc) - kenko extension tubes are the most inexpensive unless you want to look into macro lens

I must say your question is quite broad as there is lots of choice. Are you looking for professional lens or consumer lens? It is very important to state a budget as there are lens which can be 100-200 and there is the same exact lens but "pro" with way better optics and speed for 10* the price...

If I had the choice id go with a 24-70 2.8 along with a 50mm 1.8 and then work from there, of-course the price tends to be a issue sometimes though.
