I'm just curious why this photo turned out so noisy? Any help would be appreciated, Thanks

Oh alright, Thanks Steve

Yes, the higher the ISO, the more noise you will get. Try lowering the ISO and slowing down the shutter speed to let more light in. A tripod will be required.

If it was in focus and less noisy it would have been a nice image.

Different cameras produce different levels of noise at varying ISO levels as well I've noticed. I had an old 300D which was much more grainy at high ISO levels when compared to a 20D I have...
But yes, go for as low an ISO level as possible to reduce grain, compensate with a large aperture and a tripod....

For me I don't think the problem is noise, rather I think it might have been better if the Windmill isn't in focus (or at least all of it). Just a suggestion if you take another image there. Nice sky though.

Yeah, the bigger problem is that your image is out of focus. Lower your ISO, and use a tripod. Large aperture is not a must if you have a still subject.

It doesn't have all that much noise, but it is out of focus.

Did you use a tripod, and if you did, was it windy? The EXIF data indicates the exposure was for 80 seconds. (1/80")

By the way, your D40 shutter had been actuated 4927 times when you took that picture.

Why did you set the PPI for the photo to 1?

Uh, I got:

Auto exposure, 1/80 sec, f/5.6, ISO 1600

And that it was 72 pixels/inch.

Am I missing something?

Nope:

Camera Maker: NIKON CORPORATION
Camera Model: NIKON D40
Image Date: 2010:11:01 00:43:15
Focal Length: 180.0mm (35mm equivalent: 270mm)
Aperture: f/5.6
Exposure Time: 0.013 s (1/80)
ISO equiv: 1600
Exposure Bias: none
Metering Mode: Matrix
White Balance: Auto
Flash Fired: No
Color Space: sRGB

The comment on the tripod was still justified - hand held would require a shutter speed of 1/250 give or take - or very steady hands.

Nope. I screwed up on the shutter speed, but when I opened the photo in CS5 it showed a ppi of 1.

I am so proud of myself.. Before I opened this.. I thought to myself.. ISO, possibly too high.. and then I was able to see it was out of focus too..

This is a huge step for me!!

Great picture otherwise..
