wide panel broke on 430ex flash

the flash fell off of my camera and the panel came off...i guess it was not on there tight enough...wats the purpose of the panel anyway?, i never really use it...i just purchased it in august so it still under warranty...is it really that important to have it?

The flash has a zoom head and it zooms to follow the focal length of your lens. I think the range is something like 24mm to 105mm. The wide panel is for when you are using a lens that is wider than 24mm (maybe 17mm on a crop body).

One thing to watch for....the flash will zoom automatically (when set to do so) but if the panel is out, or even not in all the way, the flash will stay on it's widest setting and not zoom. So if your panel is busted, the flash probably won't zoom automatically...so you would have to do it manually. I'd probably send it in to get fixed.

well the part that it was connected to, i pushed it back inside, so the flash wouldnt think the panel is out...the zooms still work though...i think i will go head and send it anyway

I would send it in as well. If it's free, then there's no harm in doing so. If, however, it costs a lot of money to repair it, and you're sure the zoom is still working properly, you might want to think about not getting it repaired and buying a flash diffuser instead.

i just filled out a repair form to canon...the estimated price was $0 so i guess it is free...takes atleast seven days... hope i dont have anything important to pop up within those seven days...back to the old pop up
