What's new

Would you buy a camera on ebay?

ebay is a platform to hook up buyers and sellers.

I am sure there are dishonest sellers there, but in general, most of them are good. I bought a used lens from one seller before, but when the lens arrived, I noticed that the lens had fungus on it. And the seller refunded me on the purchase price + the shipping cost (both directions).

Please also noticed that a lot of authorized dealers are selling new camera gears on that platform (Adorama, Beach camera... etc) I bought my new EF 85mm f/1.8 from Beach camera ebay store for a little over $300 after the discounts. And they shipped the lens with Beach Camera invoice (for warranty service).

So my advice is if you find a good price on an items from a good sellers, why not? But don't assume the price you see on ebay is the best price. Sometimes is, sometimes is not. Do your own research.

My only skepticism with Ebay is the whole greymarket thing. With something like a D700, you most certainly want a camera that can be repaired and serviced in the U.S. JMHO :) Thumbs up to the D700, though!

Nikon's new camera/lens/accessory warranty only applies to the original owner, so a used D700 would have no Nikon warranty and would not need to be repaired by Nikon USA as a warranty issue. There are many independent Nikon authorized repair stations here in the US that are more than happy to repair any Nikon gear : Nikon Authorized Repair List

I actually bought my D300s from Cameta Camera's Ebay sale page. Refurbished with Nikon 90 day warranty but Cameta includes 1 year warranty through them. Bought the camera body for $800 less than what it would sell brand new.

Used is not the same as refurbished, and the price for refurbished is usually higher than the price for used.

Does the Cameta 1 year warranty run concurrent with Nikon's 90 day warranty? Is the Cameta warranty cover the same as Nikon's warranty on it's refurbished gear?

Edit:

Refurbished equipment is guaranteed for 90 days from the manufacturer. Cameta Camera extends this warranty to 1 year from the date of purchase.

So Cameta's warranty is actually for only 275 days, or 9 months. http://www.cameta.com/store-policy.cfm#warranty

No. Something that expensive that you may need the warranty on? E-bay would definitely not be on the top of my list..

+1...

i've got me on ebay filters, tripod, bags, software, even 35mm lens paying $160, would not spend more than couple hunread without warranty depending on what i'm buying, for $200 on a D700 i'd go adorama or alikes... but would not go ebay for high $ without warranty...

my 2 cents

Don't think I would buy a camera body off e-bay .. but I would and have bought glass and everything else I currently use ... as for the camera body .. I would rather hold it, Check it out closely and make sure its something that I am happy with.

I just took delivery of another Canon 40D camera body to use as a back up. Unfortunately I soon noticed that the autofocus does not work on multi-point. Not a problem for me really as I never use fully automatic mode but my wife does she she won't be able to use this camera.

Whoa! Good to know this!!

I haven't but, its much safer than buying from craigslist or possibly a yard sale. Because with Ebay you can return it.

I wouldn't buy a D700 from anyone on eBay.

When I spend that kind of money, I want to be able to hols the merchandise in my hands, look the seller in the eyes, and know they are going to be there in a week in case I need to see them about any issues with my purchase. On something like that, the peace of mind is worth a few extra bucks.
