Would you make the switch?

Yeah, I was planning on having a 17-40L on the 5D and 24-105L on the 40D, which I think would be a good range for weddings/events. And I'd keep a 70-200 in the bag for certain situations as well.

In the Nikon department, I'd have a 17-55 on a d300 for all-around, and a 70-200 on a d80 hanging on my shoulder. I might be getting a 70-200 from a buddy for an absurdly low price. I won't have quite the wide-end of the 5D, but I think 17mm would suffice.

I guess I'm just trying to anticipate what I'm going to need in the future, and if Nikon is about to get left in the dust again, I'd like to be prepared for it. But yeah, I'll probably just get a d300 and be extremely happy with it.

How is Nikon going to be left in the dust? They have impressive stuff. Now that they make their own sensors, things should be looking up.
Their lenses are just as good as Canon's if not as diverse. It's all in the glass. They will fill in the gaps as they see the market ask for it. Hopefully.

Wasn't it a few months ago that the D3 came out and the Canon boys drowned in their own drool? A few months before that the 1DsMkIII came out and Nikon users felt like they just slammed their head in the door.

Personally I think this is the dumbest thing I've heard all day. Yes lets all switch an entire system just because the other company has a cheaper lens. Oh wait let me guess 2 days after you switch the price of the 24-70 will come down, and Nikon will announce plans for a full frame prosumer DSLR, will you switch back?

This whole notion of Nikon / Canon is going to be left in the dust comes from people who run around with their heads up their asses. Both companies spend billions each year in R&D. Both companies have excellent products. And I know professionals who use 1DsMkIIIs and D3s and each will sware their equipment is the worlds best. Both of these companies have been around for more than 50 years. Believe me if one of them was going to be left in the dust it would have happened by now.

Oh and for those that think Nikon will be left in the dust just do a forum search on the D300 and count the posts people made while their drool was dripping on the keyboard. Then do the same for the 5D but search back a few years earlier.

Face it both companies will be around for many more years to come.

They haven't so far, so I don't expect them to start now. It just seems like Canon is quicker to release new and exciting glass, and then Nikon will follow suit. Canon has L glass in the $600 price range (17-40 F4, 70-200 F4), while you'd be hard pressed to find a gold-ring for under a thousand. I wish Nikon would consider releasing some F4's, like Canon. If you shoot with flash a lot, f2.8 is only so important. If you need it for portraits and limited DOF, your better off with a prime anyways.

I'm sure Nikon is about to release some more interesting stuff, I'm just impatient.

I just have limited funds and I want to get the best quality and versatility when I do take the plunge. If I can get the most versatile equipment for my initial investment, and have something I will be satisfied with for a long time. I'm talking about dropping a lot of money here, and I don't want to make a mistake. I just want to know, if people weren't that deeply invested in one particular brand, would they switch.

I'm pretty much starting from scratch here, trying to get a set of capable and reliable equipment that will need to help me get my footing in the industry. With the Canon gear, it seems like my buck is going a bit further, though I know the Nikon gear will have little to no issues with reliability.

I'm not an asshat for doing research, if that's what your thinking. I'm just trying to get the best tools for the job and building a brand loyalty before I get heavily invested.

I do photography just for hobby, therefore the person who needs to be satisfied is me myself. If you doing this photography as a professional than those need to be satisfied first and foremost are your clients who pay you. So the question is - will your clients moving away from you if you switch camera brand?

I think the equipments that you must use are the most productive equipments, whatever brand that is.

Paying high price for the equipments means nothing in bussiness btw, if those tools are truly generating money on regular basis. But when swimming in the cut throat environment than every bits and pieces are worth another review.

Your regular income is more important than camera brand, any brand.

Sorry the meaning of my post was lost in my venting. What I mean is that there really is no better choice. Yes the 40D right now represents excellent value. Because Nikon has released the D300 (and those people are stupid for the reasons mentioned above). What will happen in the next few months when the 5D MkII is released? All of a sudden Nikon will provide the better value as you see more D200 flood the market (for the same stupid reason).

Nikon and Canon are rather fierce competitors. If one presented better value than the other you wouldn't see their users split rather equally throughout the world. Bargain upgrades can be had with either system if you're willing to wait for the right time.

Yeah, I was just browsing ebay and I saw a lot of people getting rid of their high-end Canon gear, saying "Switching to Nikon".

And Garbz, your right. 6 months ago, there were people getting rid of Nikon gear because they were switching to Canon. I'm not planning on switching and then crying when Nikon releases some new big thing, I've been eyeing Canon for some time now.

And I think the 5D is the biggest bargain right now, because the used market is flooded with them. But, after hearing what lostprophet has to say about them, maybe I'll just wait until Nikon releases a full-frame DXXX.

Almost everyone's considered switching from one side to the other at some point. If you're selling all your gear no matter what... then use a 5D, use a D300. You're right, now might be the best time to switch, but really it always goes back and forth.

Like I said... if you're getting rid of your current stuff anyway, now would be a good time to switch. However, go actually use the two candidate cameras before you switch and regret it.

Yeah, I want to go test Canons ergonomics and the build quality of the bodies. I'm sure the 5D is built like a tank, but chances are, I'll probably be getting a 20/30D as my back-up/second body. I'm sure it will be similar to the D80 I'm using now. The 40D is still a little too expensive for a back-up at this point.

I was just looking at the cost of 'L' primes... oh my gosh. That's where the "L's are expensive!" thing comes from.

Supposedly the 5D Mk II will be weather-sealed... tbd. It is a deciding factor for me.

Unless Leica comes out with a really good dSLR.

A lot of the rumors were saying April 22 for the 5D introduction. That was yesterday
