I had the dog with me on the leash all while trying to do these. Anyway, what to do with dead valentine roses.....was a cloudy, dreary day.

Hi there-- selective color or desaturation doesn't work with most images. Most people on this forum, from my experience, don't really like it. Myself included. Derrel will be able to tell you the exact history of selective coloring.

I think if you want to pull off an image like this you've really got to separate the foreground from the background. The image is flat because so much of the frame is in focus. All the leaves give the image too much texture and are distracting. I'd try to go really shallow here with my DOF and be mindful of anything in the background (leaves) or foreground (tree) that will be distracting.

There is no such thing as ALMOST B&W! IT is either B&W or it is COLOR..... and mixtures of the two (except in very rare cases) should be cause for Tar and Feathers... and a RAIL.. and some stones flying all the while! As the culprit is escorted to the local HANGING tree.....while the firing squad loads ammo, and prepares to shoot!

So was it the dog's fault for you forgetting composition and framing? Even though you took the time to place the roses on the tombstone, a few more minutes of thought may have suggested to remove the dead limb behind it, since it adds nothing to the photo. #1 had potential with the tree root growing around the tombstone, but it looks like you just walked upon it, pointed and pushed the shutter button.

I'm not going to blame it on my dog....I'm going to blame it on Compaq! Look at how he edited my photo on Vday. Sooooo, I'm confused. I do agree that there it is lacking texture.

I agree with the person you said there is just too much in focus with these...Now I'm not saying go to 1.8 but maybe even 5.6 or open one more stop on top of that (I cant remember the exact number off the top of my head) The tonal range is flat like mentioned. Did you do any pp to these and if you did what did you do?

:lmaoUH:lmao: I had a blonde moment. What editing program do you have? I know with CS5 you could seperate them more. Blur the background more and had more tonal range. The colors are just so similar ya know

I am using an old version of Photoshop, however sometimes if I just need to do a crop I use what my photo pops up in...Windows Live photo gallery.

I played around with the tone curve sliders, then increased the blacks by a bit. I then used one of the brushes for contrast and increased the contrast and sharpness of the gravestone itself. I also played with the warm balance sliders and cooled it down just a hair.

Hope ya don't mind since it says "My photos are ok to edit"
