Your Most Disappointing Purchase

Nikkor 50mm f1.8D. I traded my 18-105mm for it. I wish I would have grabbed the 50mm f1.2ais or 1.4ais.
nikkor 35mm f1.8G. If I did it again I would have grabbed a 20mm f2.8 ais
nikon D90. I would have bought it used instead of new or have just gotten a film camera as I would have a full darkroom by now if I would have gone that route.

I don't regret the price. Just the Bokeh characteristics when stoped down. I wish it had 9 blades or round blades.

Yeah I agree. The bokeh isn't very good. BUT... you gotta admit, that's a sharp effin lens for $100

Just seems out all the gear I've collected it seems to be the weakest link. Could be I'm not using it right, or a little from column A and a little from column B.

The only thing I regret purchasing is the Nikon 1.7 TC II. It works great, I just never use it. I only used it a few times before getting the Bigma OS and since then it hasn't seen the light of day.

Neoprene camera cover. It only cost 7 quid but a dead loss, Way too slow and fiddly to use.


...and (as my wife helpfully pointed out) it looks like a codpiece.

Fast forward to 2001. I bought the Tokina AT-X Pro 28-80mm f/2.8 zoom. It quickly became known as "Der Flaremeister". And to make matters worse, I bought it brand-new, at full retail, which at that time was like $699 or something ungodly. It had a serious problem with light sources. If you even THOUGHT ABOUT shooting it toward the sun, or the bright sky, it would preemptively flare, as a way to make you reconsider the upcoming shot!

That's probably quite valuable now that taking images with bad glass, horrible flare, and printing them with expired chemicals and then leaving the print to sun-fade in a window that doesn't have UV coating for a few years has become "the look" that's in style these days. People actually use editing software to create that look. You can tell them you'll save them hours of processing by using a lens that can "get it right" in the camera. :mrgreen:

Maybe it was some old reading I did but maybe I'm wrong here.




In any case I do love the look of F1.2 on film. But I'm not gonna drop $500 on a lens just for F1.2! But then again I would love to have one on my FM2 with some portra 800 when we go out to eat.


Honestly, I don't think I'll spend any money on another 50mm untill nikon releases a new 50mm f1.2 AF-S, if they ever do.

I like this comparison. I would like to see the other models like the 1.4 af-s, 1.8 af-s, 1.4 ais, 1.8 ais, f2 ais, and 58mm f1.2 noct but I can't expect one person to have them all!!!! Wait, Derrel?
